Fuel Pump

97 LSI...pretty sure the fuel pump is going. This morning it bogged down SEVERELY going up a hill, and the Check Engine light started blinking at me. Then on the way home, it stalled out going sround a corner.

Not happy.

Anyway - I can pick up a used pump for $60, shipping included.

Unfortunately, I suspect the pump is inside the tank.

1) am I correct in my suspicion?
2) I have neighbors who are very mechanically savvy (one of them is going to run the code for me tomorrow), have power tools and ramps, and can be assuaged with beer. Is replacing the fuel pump something we can handle, if the answer to numer 1 is yes?

Yeah, it's inside the tank. It can be accessed through a port on top. In the center of the trunk line is a metal plate with 3(?) screws. Remove that plate and you'll see the top of the tank and all the fittings.

Remember all the safety things...

- Open all windows and doors and trunk to ventilate as best as you can.
- Disconnect the battery
- No smoking

Wait...wait...this can be done without removing the tank?

Just want to confirm the fuel pump/senders (they're all connected) CAN be removed through the port on the top under the backseat. I think there's one bolt that holds the whole assembly (2 pieces clipped together) on a hanger inside the tank. not really that difficult to remove/replace.

I would make sure it's the fuel pump before you go and rip your possibly good one out. Your description makes me think of a knock sensor or MAF before the fuel pump. Besides, as I recall, the suction from the pump is at the back of the tank, so going up a hill would cause the fuel to go more toward the pump, not away from it.

No real order to it, just pull off the kick panel and plug one of the two blue wires into the appropriate spot... Definitely check that out, I'm not sure that a fuel pump would signal an ECU code???

Roger that. I'll definitely check the codes first. Results in 24-48 hours.

Odds from this thread:

MAF: 5-2
Fuel Pump: 4-1
Knock Sensor: 7-1

Make your bets.

I'm thinking that when a fuel pump fails, it fails... and you walk. My money is on some other problem.
