Subaru very often win Tow Vehicle of the Year here in Europe for towing caravans and so on.

If you are looking at only one vehicle to replace a flatbed truck, I would advise against an estate. I had two Legacy Twin Turbo estates, they would haul tree stumps, but you wreck the interior with rough stuff inside.

For one vehicle only towing a trailer, you need a Forester 2.5 manual.

The 2nd gen Legacys rolled out after the SVXs release were directly modeled from the SVX design so they would match. Same goes for the XT and 1st gen.
I implied nothing more than this.

from what i know,

Legacy = 2.2 L

Outback = 2.5L (and optional H6 3.0), higher gound clearence...however older outbacks (96-99) have some head gasket problems, so be weary!

Gen 1 2.2 DOHC
Gen2 2.5 DOHC
Gen 3 2.5 DOHC and 3.0(180hp about and 25ish MPG)
gen 4 2.5 both DOHC and SOHC and they redid the 6 to a 3.0R with 250HP lighter also with 28ish MPG (had bad responces from people on the under powered over weighted 3.0 of the 2002-04)
I would suggest with all this you factor you could find a Baja get a rally suspension if you wanted and even pick up a 3.0R for like 3k and then you have a nice 250Hp tower that you don't have to worry about messing up the insides. Or just got pick up a beater 4x4 for 1000 that won't ever get stuck(cept at the pump. for trucks tend ton get like 10-15mpg with out getting like a brand new one.

Only the 1995 Outbacks and the 1996 Manual Outbacks got 2.2L engines (all the rest got 2.5's or better). They were NOT DOHC, but based simply on the 1990-1994 EJ22, which is SOHC.

I've seen a mid 80's Volvo station wagon fitted with a Chevy V8 that could haul or pull quite a bit. This guy had less than $1000 in it and was built like a tank.
