The "logic" of all this eludes me.

In Japan Subaru have always had the WRX available as a 5 door hatchback. As with many things in Japan, these are bought for everyday use rather than lifestyle statements, and many are automatic. Very few of these "wagons" were sold. The saloon body style as used in the rally machinery probably outsells them 10:1.

So why do they think now that everybody the world over wants a wagon body style?

Granted since they dropped the "classic" style about 97, every saloon they have come up with is ugly as sin.

So instead of headhunting a few body stylists from the Mitsubishi Lancer stable, they are going to offer a new hatchback????

They deserve to lose. They have nobody with an eye for style or with a vision of what people like to drive.

Joe

"Very few of these Wagons were sold." Based on what evidence.

The WRX 5 door hatchback is very popular in N.Z. My Son has one as do friends. It is effectively an excellent small station wagon/estate car and is very practical. What is more it goes, stops and handles.

This car has had the reputation of being the most likely to be stolen, as is confirmed by insurance claims. A sure vote that it is desirable.

They're gonna make the only car not many of us were interested in
I dunno about that, it is true that subaru just might jump on the bandwagen like everyone else, nissan just did it with the versa! and even kia is in that game with the rondo.

The paragraph you took the quote from Trevor was talking about Japan, what was available in Japan.

The "evidence" such as it is would be my monitoring of what cars are available for sale on the second hand and auction market in Japan. It is a reasonable presumption that the ratio of saloons to hatchbacks on sale on the second hand market will reflect over a period the ratio in which these models were sold when new.

On that basis I stand on my assertion, that you will find 8 or 10 WRX saloons for sale in Japan second hand, for every 1 WRX hatchback or wagon you find.

I think Fuji are hoping they will emulate the sales success that is the Ford Focus, a hatchback that has a WRC champion at the top of the tree.

What they are missing in this assumption is that the Focus in bog standard trim is a handsome car, one whose proportions and looks are attractive even without rally add-ons.

The new Impreza on the other hand is very likely to be as ugly as everything they have designed in the last 10 years with the honorable exception of the current Legacy

Oh, man... they're still showing that thing around? The first thing I'd do is get rid of the outrageously high liftover for that hatch. Form matters, but function is kind of handy, too, yeh?

I really don't know what the designers were smoking when they designed that new WRX. I hope they all died from it though.

This has me very interested. All I've heard about officially is the turbo deisel and and the 3.6L engine. I havent heard anything about a new car. Im hoping for a BS11 variant (SVX) but im betting on something lame like the new Legacy (nothing against it) or the new Impretza (big dissapointment).

I guess we'll know soon.

I doubt if they bring back the Justy again, since all the other companies are bringing their small cars like MB - B Class, Nissan - Versa, Honda - City, Toyota - Yaris, BMW - 1 series and Alfa Romeo with their famous 147GTA.... and also Subaru had an issue about Justy in their 2006/2007 drive magazine... hmmm have to wait and see...
