Cool K & N air filter

This one was mainly for NUTSHL (but thought it might be good to post) - he was asking me what the K & N part number was for replacing the stock air filter in the stock air box.

p/n = 33-2031-1

unsure of cost as mine was bought in 1999 for NZ$135+gst

Go mine from Pioneer Auto Parts, 278 Church St, Penrose, Auckland.
phone (09) 634-4115

regards

Steve

Mine cost $109.96AU

I have since been told by a performance mechanic that the oil from the k & N filter can cause faults in the MAF sensor, but unsure of the validity, i still use mine i just dont oil it

Cool K & N filter

Funny - I/ve had mine in the car for nearly 7 years (clean it every Xmas) - never had an issue, maybe you "coated" the filter with way to much oil?.

regards

Steve

Does it make any difference? I had a foam filter in mine when I first got it but was unsure of the ability to trap particulates and removed it.

Cool K & N filter

Foam material when dry is most unsuitable as a form of filter, this is because of the material - it is "open cell in nature" - hence the very fine particles will in time be able to work their way through the material wall & make it out of the other side into MAF & engine.

Hence this is where the oil come into it's own - it stops & traps the dust particles from moving off the surface that it becomes attached to.

Hence when removing the K&N filter from car to clean - ALWAYS return it facing the MAF sensor with same side facing - otherwise you could "suck" any minute particles from "dirty" side of filter back into MAF & engine.

Also when cleaning the filter ALWAYS soak with dirty side down in liquid - so that particles sink, and blow with low pressure from the MAF side of filter, thereby blowing dirt back the way it arrived!!!

My 2 pennies worth - what have others found out?

It was recommended not too long ago to switch between paper and "high flow" filters depending on conditions and intended rev limits.
Any gains from the K&N filter are negligible, and they are not as effective at trapping dirt.

Only K&N gain. You are paying for their BS advertising.
