Money from my coin holder stolen by bodyshop!

I just got my car back from the body shop. I had the bumpers, spoiler, and a few other areas repainted. It came out nice. But, I'm pissed because my coin holder was completely full of quarters and when I got the car back there was only one quarter there. Obvioulsy left so I would think that's all I had. The quarters were packed in tight with all the heads in the same direction -- I know -- OCD!

Should I tell the body shop owner that one of his guys ripped me off? It's not a lot of money, but I think I should tell the owner.

I'd tell the guy. My friend brought his car to Canadian Tire (the do-it-all nation wide garage/department store up here) and the car came back minus about $20 worth of assorted change and small bills. Someone ended up in deep $hit after that one.

Check if the shop has a policy on merchandise left in the car.

i think either way if something happens or not you should let them know. like crazypilot said - in the end, someone could be in deep **** after that. maybe not. but at least you would have brought it out.

Don't leave money in a car that you are taking to any shop... Lesson learned, I hope.

I always keep a backpack in my vehicles and when I drop them off, I put everything I can in there, money, garage door opener, radio faceplate, cd's, tools,....Mechanics are crooks from my experience...and I always give them my spare key only, not the whole keyset that has all my keys on it.

What really pisses my off if a mechanic leaves a cigarette butt in my ashtray and my cars are never smoked in

I agree.

Makes me all the more grateful that my mechanic is trustworthy, and reminds me of a time when the housekeeping supervisor at some motel gave me lip about leaving my pocket change on the dresser in my room, because, you know, her subordinates might not be able to resist the temptation. Pathetic.

I think a good rule of thumb is, never leave money anywhere, period.

Well, I'm calmer today. It pissed me off a lot when it happened. Especially because the thief left one quarter so I would think that's all I had. I agree, I should have taken the money out of there, but I forgot -- I did remove my sunglasses, cd's and other stuff.

I decided not to say anything. I figure the kind of person who steals like this will mess up again and the boss will catch him. I don't want to be part of the chain of events that gets someone fired. Plus, the people working at the bodyshop are in much worse financial shape than I am.

I'm glad to learn that the thief bought Pepsi and snacks

Yeah, I too never leave my house key with service station.

In the early 80's my Dad left his wedding ring on his key chain -- he completely forgot it was there -- he had hurt his hand at that's why it was there. Anyway, you guessed the rest -- the service station in Los Angeles, no offense to the Mexican workers there (sorry Mencia), took the ring. As fate would have it, my Dad and crazy stepmother divorced soon after, so it wasn't all bad.

No, about $6 worth. And if I was in NYC and need this much to feed the meter I would have been screwed and gotten a $115 parking ticket. Thing is, theft is theft. I heard that a sanitation worker got fired for taking home 2 rolls of dept of sanitation provided toilet paper.
