Linux help?

Last week, I had the misfortune of my hard drive crashing.....

Since I lost my Windows XP Pro startup disk and everything, I don't have a Key that will go through the activation process, thus I will only have windows for about 15 more days before it locks up or whatever. Since I really don't want to spend 200.00 on a new Windows XP Pro disc, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Linux? I'm running a Dell laptop with 256 mb RAM, 2.2 GHZ processor, and a 60 GB HD. If someone could point me to the right version of Linux to download, it would be much appreciated.

I haven't used it in years,
which makes my opinion obsolete,
however,
I am fond of RedHat.

None that I am aware of. The version I used was very streamlined, stable, and did everything I needed but run a secure network.

Hi,

I'm a Network Administrator and I use Linux all the time. At my company, all our critical systems run on Linux. It is a far better system than Windows, but you need to be a geek like me to get the best out of it.

Have a look at CentOS: http://www.centos.org

It's a copy of RedHat's Enterprise Linux, but it's free.

PM me if you need any help.

Phil.

What are you using your laptop for? Do you need to continue to use MS Windows based programs?

b3lha, Please correct me if I'm wrong - I don't think any flavor of Linux has any type of emulation to be able to use MS Windows based programs, although there are many good free Linux based programs available that will do the same things as the MS Windows based programs.

Also, laptops seem to need special drivers for touchpads, etc. that might not be included in a basic Linux build. You may have to do some searching.

On a more positive note, you should be able to get a new install disk from Dell for minimal expense . . . as long as the laptop wasn't stolen. They'll ask you for the model number and serial number from the laptop to determine which disk(s) to ship out.

Good Luck,
Dan

if it's a dell, you don't have to have the original disc to reinstall. all you need is any copy of the software. the cd key should be located on the bottom of your dell. all you have to do is call microsoft and read them the product id registration code on the screen to register it.

then again you could download a cracked version to install.

Looking the bottom of my Sony laptop . . . Yes, I completely forgot about that.

Depending on what your needs are (and the expense), it might still be worth while to get the install disks from Dell as they should include the applications that were originally sold with your laptop.

Judging from your original statement that your hard drive crashed, I'm assuming you're starting out with a fresh drive full of zeros. Replacing the applications can be just as fru$trating as replacing the operating system.

You are mostly correct. There is the WINE project (http://www.winehq.com) that allows you to run many windows programs under Linux. I haven't tried it myself so I can't comment on how good it is. Like you said, there are a lot of good Linux programs.

I have a few laptops running Linux OK. The only one's I've had problems with are some really up to date ones with firewire hard drives etc.

We buy the Dell Optiplex laptops for our sales guys. They come with an XP disk that will only install on a Dell PC and it doesn't ever ask for a CD Key.

if it asks for activation, then it's not cracked.
