She's a smoker
My SVX just started to develop a smoking problem. Oil coming from the valve covers is the culprit. Anyone have a clue as to how much the gaskets are for the valve covers?

Gaskets are cheap. However, doing them is a pain. In my car, it's relatively easy with a lot of open space in the engine bay..SVX..not so much engine room.

You'll need the gaskets (like 3 of them and will want to replace the grommets). Figure about $60 per side from www.libertysubaru.com It'll probably take ya about 3 hours or so per side unless you've had some experience. Definately easier if you remove the battery, airbox, coolant tank and water washer tank from the get go but still a pain. Not something I'd recommend for a novice around the engine as chances are you'll overtighten something and it'll still leak.

The gaskets are cheap...once you add up all the grommets it gets a little expensive. I've currently got on order enough to change 2 engines.

Ooooohhhhh, that plastic thing. Yeah, that's not the rear main seal. That's the oil/water separator plate. Definately replace that. The plastic ones are bad and like you said, tend to crack.

In the context it's the little metal/rubber seal that seals the valve cover bolts.
