Direct Hits Ignition Upgrade
I read in a magazine with just this direct hit ignition upgrade a honda 1.8 picked up something like 10 hp at the wheels on a dyno, not bad for 200$.I was wondering would this system have a bigger impact with a svx ignition system.

is it anything like the msd stacker that dayle sells?
he says its feels more responcive, and i was thinking about it for a future mod. |

You would have to mod the stock coils. There in no way to get those big two part spark plugs to fit the stock coils.

Also keep in mind that the Honda's stock ignition system is a distributor with a dinky ass coil. If there's a pre-existing weakness a band-aid fix like that direct hits system can pick up a lot of power, but it'd still be better to just buy a good MSD DIS box or something similar instead (on a Honda that is)
The SVX's coil on plug DLI is vastly superior to a stock Honda ignition system. |

You'll notice if you look at the dyno chart closely the horsepower of the vehicle is very low to begin with, probably because it's a piece of crap.

There is a decent technical article on the DirectHits website. There is much talk of improved conversion of electrical energy to spark, but not much on improvements in HP. My suspicion is that the significantly brighter spark is much more than needed.

Yes you have a very good point,I may be getting a MSD soon and hoping that will rid my flaming tailpipes condition when on the spray.

The SVX's stock ignition system provides multiple spark.
I really don't see why people insist on "piggy backing" things we really don't need. It's like... putting those stick on carbon fiber hood scoops etc... just my $.02 |

It consists of a spark gap is series with the Hi tension lead. It worked well with the T models ignition, that was a continous supply of sparks to the plug. Plugs tended to oil up, back then, so the resistance of the plug was lowered by the deposits. This allowed the Hi voltage to leak down the insulator, so that the spark did not jump the gap. The fix was to cut the Hi tension lead, and insert a coat button, the ends of the leads were threaded through the oppersit button holes, so that the Hi tension had to develope a higher voltage to jump the gap. This higher voltage then fired the dirty plug. When ever we had a plug that would not fire, we just pulled the lead off the plug, to cause the spark to jump the gap to the plug, and the plug would fire up again. So this gadget is in this class, it contains a spark gap to raise the voltage. As modern ignition systems like ours can provide more than enough voltage, to fire the plug under any conditions, these devices are outdated by technology and cleaner burning spark plugs. A blast from the past. Harvey. p.s our system supplys only one long spark, not multiple sparks.
