rear wheels turn

Once in awhile I read a description of the svx on e-bay, and they mention the rear wheels turn a little with the front tires. Is this true? Can anyone give some more information on this?

Most SVXes have what Subaru calls "Passive Rear Wheel Steering". There has been some debate about whether this is an accurate name for it.

In Japan, there was a model called the version L, which had "Active 4WS". One of these is parked in my driveway

You can feel the passive rear steering when you hit an entrance/exit ramp with sticky tires going way too fast. Just about the point where your buttcheeks crease the drivers seatbottom and think you are going to slide her out, the back end kinda slinks around and you end up sticking like glue and squirting right through. It's a wierd feeling. You have to be pushing pretty hard to really feel it. Strange thing is I haven't felt it yet on all season tires. I think they slide before they push the suspension hard enough to do it. I only have felt it on good sets of the Z rated stickyness.

I actually nailed one this morning when I was about to miss an entrance ramp and had to go 3 lanes over and get to the ramp kinda unexpectedly and a little faster than I would have if I had known where I was going. I get a strange feeling in my spine just thinking about it. Or maybe that is the vodka.
Any sailors here? It gives me the same sensation as successfully jibing a spinnaker in 15+ knots of wind. Speed --> temporary uneasyness --> quick change in direction --> squirt and speed again.

The tail of the dragon at Deal's Gap has many a turn that you can feel it on.

I thought the passive rear wheel steering was only on JDM cars.. none made for USA are equipped with the system, am I mistaken?

Good Question...

I'd forgotten about that feature until this thread reminded me. I remember reading about the "passive" rear end and I don't remember if all AWD SVX's had it or just JDM. But that was back in '92...
I just got new 245/45 16 Avon MTech 500's on 16x8 Mazda RX7 wheels (be like Chike) and the Avons are a summer tire 280AA rated and pretty sticky. I have an up hill sharp right hand banked on ramp I usually go through at 60. When I went through on the new rolling stock at 70 I thought that was the rear suspension just compressing. Was it? Or do these US puppies really have "passive steering"?

i thought that rear wheel steering was only an idea when they were creating the svx, just like the voice activated controls and whatever other crazy things they were thinking of. But there is 4ws?

Some JDM SVXes have active 4ws. The rest of the SVXes all have passive 4ws.
