decisions regarding failing tranny :(

as some of you know, the tranny on my claret started to flare at every 1-2 shift on tuesday. after reading some threads, i though my tranny would benefit from the brake band adjustment. i made some calls and was first told that the tranny would have to be removed from the vehicle to adjust the band resulting in a six hour labor charge of about $550. on my second call, i was told that they couldn't do it and that it wouldn't help. finally, i called the dealer and was told the brake bad adjustment could be done for about $100. i was elated and took my car in to be looked at this morning. i was disappointed later this afternoon to be told again by the dealer that the adjustment wouldn't help and that my tranny was beginning to fail. so now it's time to decide what to do next.

Aww, man. I hope you get it back on the road for cheap. I hope it's not the whole rebuild route. Thoughts are with you, man. This is one thing this Canadian WON'T laugh at. Good luck.

Of course their going to tell you its failing. They want you to tell them to replace it with a remanufactured one. I'm telling you the adjustment should work. They won't know its failing unless they removed it...took it apart and looked inside...or they took it out for a drive. But if its just a 1-2 flare then an adjustment should be fine.

zeppelin is gonna take a look at my car next week. we didn't have a chance to talk, but maybe he knows how to do the adjustment. it won't hurt to try if it's failing anyway. i won't be making any decisions 'til then.

Hmm...why not convert it to a 5 speed? That would be cool, one automatic and one manual svx in the garage I can't imagine they would give you anything for a 15 year old car with a bad tranny if you traded it in. And selling it without telling someone wouldn't be cool, find a used tranny or 5 speed, you've got the resources, it's just a matter of making time. You do have 2 newer cars, if it was me I would narrow out my options before bringing it to its death.

i couldn't do that to some poor unsuspecting soul, just thought i'd throw that option in for fun. as for trading it in, i don't think i'd tell the dealer. i'm sure the scion dealer would just wholesale it out and not sell it on their lot.

Yeah mark should know what to do. Won't hurt the tranny any to try. It will save your car. And my plan was the latter

Have Mark look at it, and if it can't be adjusted, I would drive it till it fails and then put in a remanufactured one. The other option would be for a 5 or 6 MT. Good luck with the adjustment.
