i just replaced the #1 injector, no change. only other thing i can think of, is MAF, an ignitor issue, or the wiring from the coil connector to the ignitor? AAAARRRRRGH! everything is fine once car warms up after a few minutes.

Alan I would check all the inlet manifold bolts. The injector stacks to the head, and the manifold to injector stack, bolts. May have a leak when its cold.
Harvey.

Some text ripped from endwrench Early glitches True early OBD II systems had some problems. For example, the '95 and '96 Legacy, Impreza and SVX versions may exhibit a "not ready" condition during a state I/M program inspection because they reset their readiness code at each engine shut-down. To boil it down to essentials, it will illuminate the MIL(malfunction indicator lamp) if a system or component fails or deteriorates to the point where emissions could rise to one and one-half times the Federal Test Procedure standards. From an emissions standpoint, a misfire is about the most dangerous malfunction blah, blah blah i'm tired of typing. If you don't bother to use the misfire monitor, your SOL! This is a favorite feature of OBD II you can look at misfire counts by cylinder. etc, etc, etc. Alan, I would say if your getting no CEL, MIL leave it alone. If it's tripping a code, TITTD< acronym Victor

I agree with Harvey and add that you might want to check the IAC, as it only functions at idle (cold only?)
I haven't heard of the MAF being a problem only when the engine is cold. -Bill

I have the exact same problem. The only difference is I get Cylinder #5 misfire. It's not an OBDII bug. The car definitely runs rough and misses for about 20 to 30 seconds. The CEL light flashes then latches on.
The problem always occurs at the same time. About 3 to 5 minutes after start up with the temperature gauge just starting to move above the C. LIke Landshark I have to go up a long hill leaving work. Once the car is warm there is never, and I mean never a problem. What sensor or operating conditions are becomong active about that time? |

aux air valve - Harvey has mentioned it is under the left side of the intake. anyone know the procedure for removing/replacing it? does the entire intake need to be removed? <shudder>

Subaru Select Monitor?
Is that different than the code scanner that Advance Auto will loan you?
I borrow their scanner and read the codes. The only code set it Misfire Cylinder #5. My car is a '97 also with a randomly set CEL. The car definitely runs rough for a brief period of time the code is valid. But what is causing the code? Something changes in the operating conditions as the coolant gauge moves just above the C mark. I thought plugged EGR ports might have merit. A slow responding auxiliary air valve or might also lean things out. |
