Hella.

I got a new tranny sent from Subaru for $4k when mine went out. How would I be able to tell if I got the VTD one or not? I mean, for $4k and only a 15k mile warranty I'd better have.

If not, how hard would it be to install the VTD center diff while keeping the same everything else? Could this be done by just removing the rear driveshaft?

VTD would require a different TCU. I doubt you got that. I don't think you can just install a VTD center diff.

I thought only the STi got the locking center differential... Ive had my driveshaft out and I havent seen a center differential yet

And yes open differentials seem not to make any sense.. sending the power to the wheel that has no traction but thats an open differential, its why they make vicous and locking differentials...

Im used to my svx only spinning one front and one rear wheel... its like having 2wd but it can pick which 2 to spin... the two with the least traction...

If it is only spinning one rear wheel, your limited slip is malfunctioning. That, and it is a weak limited slip to begin with.

Open diff is cheap, simple, and generally goes around corners better. It allows the wheels to turn at different speeds. High percentage locking limited slip in the front will cause the tires to chirp because they only want to go in a straight line at the same exact speed.

Ok Lets get one thing straight... The SVX has a limited slip rear... this means the rear wheels SHOULD spin at the same (or close to) rate. The front differential is open... which means one wheel can spin while the other is stopped. Diff 101

The (center diff) transfer clutches are of active control design. They are powered by Sol. C in the transmission to react and send certain amounts of torque to the rear wheels based on conditions monitored by the transmission. If you Sol. C is broken or has failed, you could end up with the clutches fully engaged or fully open. Fully engaged will cause a binding in the driveline while fully open will allow for 0% of torque made to go to the rear wheels.

With that said, if your rear wheels were no help but they did have traction, that means the transmission was not putting any power to the rear wheels... and with what I just mentioned, who can tell me what that means?? Thats right!!! The transfer clutches are not working properly!!! Now do some research and find out which symptoms of which problem matches yours the best and go from there with the repair

Tom

No the center diff is what splits power from front to rear. Front is what puts power to the axles...same for the rear. All Subarus that have AWD have 3 differentials

My front dif just locks and unlocks very loudly and hard... to the point that i thought Id ripped my transmission out... as it rolls in gear it will lock up and almost stop the car... is that Solenoid C doing it or have I mechanically screwed something up? Under power breaking it will slip as in Neutral and then pop in... once again solenoid C or is it mechanical?

No, your differential has probobly grenaded and looks like a box of steel cereal right now. I just did a front diff rebuild for a guy who broke 3 teeth off of his pinion gear..

When someone says center dif I think of a separate differential like the one in my dads truck located between two driveshafts behind the cab. front dif I think of a differential fed power from a driveshaft with two axles coming from it, same with the rear. Simply put I think of a truck setup... 4WD when I think center differential.
