--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi all, im new to this forum, so wasssup!!

i posted this same questions in another forum but no responce,
i realy hope you guys can help me.

i need some dimensions on the FWD tranny for the svx.

if any one has this tranny laying around and could take some messurements for me, thanks!

i need to know:

1:how long the tranny is from end to end.

2:lenght from the front of the tranny to the center of the drive axle, and the from the center of the drive axle to the rear.

3: and if you have a wrx engine, the total width, length, and higth with components on.

and what engine and tranny year this dimensions came from.

i dont own a subaru, but im realy interested in swaping my current vehicle engine and tranny with a wrx engine and svx tranny, for a rear wheel drive longitudenal install.
thank in advance for any help you can give me,

Pretty cool ideal, I've had 3 Fieros, so I have an ideal what you're goin to need....

I have a AWD tranny laying in the garage over at my father-in-laws, that is the same as the FWD tranny except for the tail extension for the rear driveshaft.
And I have a EG33 (The SVX motor) and a EJ22 (A Legacy motor) over there too...If i think of it the next time I'm over there I'll get some measurements off them.

The tranny is pretty long, though....will have to be a pretty good stretch on the Fiero to stick it in there....of course a WRX motor is very short front to back, but the axle location needs to stay by in line with the wheels...

I've attached a pic of my AWD auto tranny, the only diff in the FWD tranny is that rear extension for the driveshaft yoke isn't there on the FWD ones..

@huck369 : im glad to hear you had a few fieros,so you know why i feel the need to change the engine and tranny, too bad you dont still have them to play with.
by the looks of the picture you posted the tranny does look preaty long ,even without the rear extension,
i atteched a pic, witch kind of gave me a difrent idea, when it came to the lenght of the tranny, witch im getting conserned now, cus the stretch is realy only good to fit everything betwen the front of the engine to the driveaxle, im not looking to stretch behind the rear wheels just to hide the tranny, lol. i am glad to hear the engine is very short, if you can provide the messurements for me thanks you so much,
im not going to be home for another month so theres no hurry,
thanks again, hope to hear from you, later

Yeah, that pic only shows part of the tranny....

As for the length, I'd say the FWD tranny will set about right in a Fiero, if you cut out the trunk section....
And the WRX motor is very short front to back...in the neighborhood of 18"...but I'll try to remember to get some measurements the next time I'm at my Father-in-laws...

I'd probably be more worried about the width on the Subaru motors, as being a boxer motor, they are pretty wide...

18" motor length! thats very good news, thanks, thats going to help on keeping the strech lengh to a minimum,as far as cutting the trunk i dont mind at all,the fiero trunk space its only usefull to carry a tool box, lol.
thanks again for trying to get me the measurements.

thanks.c u l8ter.

Can't say about a FWD model, but this is for a 1992 SVX 4EAT auto transaxle with AWD, maybe someone can fill in.

1. From the mating surface of the transaxle to engine to the tip of the extension for the rear propeller shaft (driveshaft), it's 34 inches.

2. From the same front flange to the center of the axle is 6-13/16 inches

if it helps, the front surface to the part where the AWD transfer section is, is 26-1/4 inches. For the FWD model you need only add the back section to know total length.

can't say axle to rear since I don't know FWD, but you can figure it out given you find out how long the rear section is.

I don't have the SVX torque converter available to measure, but I think it sticks out of the transaxle by about 3/16-inch.

Here is a rough draft with dims of a 4-cylider Subaru engine with a FWD tranny behind it...All the dims are rough...I tried to err to the larger inch, so if those dims clear you should be good to go...

Hope it helps you out...

@lee
and
@huck369:
thank you guys, those dimensions where exactly what i needed, the drawing is awsome, thanks for taking the time.
i believe this swap is going to work,
the engine will clear the fieros engine bay width by about 3" per side and if thats not enogh i can cut about 2.5" per side to make more room. sweeeeeeet.
now ill have to calculate the rest of the dimensions to see how much i got to stretch.thanks you guys for your help.
this forum rocks.
is there a way to give you all a +, or a 10?
thanks again guys.

Yes, the dims are off a 4EAT Subaru Tanny out of a Legacy, basically the same tranny Subaru has used since the late 80's

By the way, I'd try to find a Legacy/Impreza FWD 4EAT as I believe they run a lower final drive ratio....
