PhastSVX, good find. I was also thinking that he was running the intake piping underneath his whole set-up and the front-mount intercooler supports that.

I'll also say this - if this guy was able to dump this much money into buying a huge ball bearing turbo w/ intercooler, I'm sure he has a built motor with a lower compression ratio to run higher boost numbers. His set-up is a one-off stand alone system that I've neer seen duplicated - he's probably put at least 60K+ into this car (conservatively).

how do you know what kind of management he has? Also how do you know its a ball bearing cartridge by looking at it?

Considering the amount of the intercooler alone (about $3000.00) I would venture to say it is ball bearing. But it does not look much bigger than the tdo5 I had on my eclipse. It all seems kinda tight. Like an rx-7, the car seems to dissipate heat about as well as an oven. And we all know why rotarys aren't boosted anymore--they overheat and die. I don't feel like spending a fortune to burnout my motor. But I will give a hats off for the effort. The work put into it is beautiful. That is someone who really takes pride in their SVX.
Any ideas on hp output?

PhastSVX, I don't know. I was only making an educated guess based off of the extensive lengths this guy went through to get an intercooled turbo'd SVX. If I spent 15 grand on a turbo, intercooler, wastegate, piping, etc., I would be foolish not to have a stand alone Engine Management system that would prevent my investment from blowing up! And a built motor to handle high levels of boost would be icing on the cake!

This guy is obviously not hurting for money!

I was hoping you might fathom a guess! I pulled my SportCompact Car Magazine featuring the Ultimate Street Car Challenge and looked over the different turbo setups several contestants ran - a big intercooled turbo set-up like this would easily be able to boost hp output by over 150% (based on gains from DSMs, Supras, RX-7's, Skylines).

The base output of the EG33 engine is 230hp, but if he lowered the compression ratio to say 8.5:1 to run higher boost, output would have dropped to 200hp approx (w/o boost). If he is running a conservative boost level of say 1 bar (14.7psi), output could be in 450-500hp range!

Exclamation Gulp!

"...output could be in 450-500hp range!"

Transmission oughta' handle that with no problems, right?

Nice work, he probably routes the pressure through the other fender and up to the intake.

I have done this type of routing on a XT-4 before, but thru 2 intercoolers, one chargecooler (water cooled), and one ordinary intercooler.
The only drawback with this very long "plumbing" is the "lag" of the system is very noticable, esp. in lower gears.

A very rough rule is 10% for every (inercooled) 0.1 bar

Thumbs up

We would still be talking 400hp+ with that equation! I'm sure the transmission has had to be upgraded (maybe even the driveshaft). Thing is...if you have the money and good connections...tuners can fabricate some sweet stuff for you!

svxsubaru1, I spent a couple of hours searching for intercoolers that were in the $800 range that you mentioned and found none. Typical prices ranged from $1500 to well over $5000. Now I'm not sure if you're referring to a smaller intercooler system that would work on a turbo'd civic, but all large respectable ones made by HKS, Greddy, etc. run at least $1,500. For illustration, the intercooler upgrades offered for the 3000GT VR-4/Stealth by Dynamic Racing can be seen here. And these aren't even the biggest systems available for these cars. And if you look at systems offered for the Supra & Skyline GT-R, the best ones run into 5-6K range.

And the intercooler this guy has on that Turbo'd SVX is pretty large! Crash was being conservative when he said $3,000.00.

the fact still remains imo that this motor runs pretty hot and turbos get'em coooking even hotter. I really don't think this motor can handle that kind of heat (matched with the type of driving one would do with that hp) for very long without a BeCool rad. and some serious cooling work. Am I wrong?

Geez, man, I just don't get it. For that kind of dough, I'd be driving a different, very sweet SVX every day of the week.
