Yep, we tried that and it wouldn't go in. Driving on the old one for now - so far so good it made the trip to NY without a problem.

I also had a front one lose its balls on my wagon - it was a reman from pep boys and lasted all of 2 months before it croaked. I was in the middle of doing donuts in 6" of snow in a parking lot when my 4x4 wagon became a rear wheel drive wagon. I thought I blew something in the tranny.
Subarus do not do well in snow in rear wheel drive.

When we took it to van bortle subaru for a new one thay found that the pep boys axle actually had an extra ball floating around inside the boot - it must have jammed in there somehow to destroy the joint. Great quality control. Pep boys refunded me without too much yelling when I showed them the blown axle.
