For those on dial-up - don't bother with a firewall. Also anyone not familiar with firewall software like Zonealarm should stay away from them unless they like to see the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error in Internet Explorer.

ZoneAlarm - "msimn.exe is trying to access the Internet do you want to allow this?"

User - "yes?"

User - "how come I can't get my e-mail?"
I use BlackIce as my firewall on my cable connection. I never have a problem and it runs seemlessly in the background. It's not the most configurable piece of software out there but so far so good.

I've had zonealarm for over two years now..trouble free...The way it functions takes a bit getting used to...allow...disallow..etc..but once you get it down it's fine. The latest version has some issues with certain applications, but 2.6 is good. If the "page cannot..." screen comes up. My guess is the program control is not configured properly. The one thing that ZoneAlrm does that i believe...I could be wrong...is exclusive to them is it stops outgoing info...not just incoming. Sometimes the configuration of certain services in program control give you a hard time. As far as outlook being uncoopertive not sure...was it still after you disabled ZA? Sometimes Adstoppers, Popup killers and other internet related apps do funky things to your WSOCK and can cause connectivity problems with other apps. That's my skew anyway. Also... if there is any system that is in that rough a' shape that Ad-Aware of all things, cripples it, why bother being concerned with spyware.

Firewalls are good, if you know how to use/configure them. Firewalls are bad for those who are told they should have one on their computer.

It's true that a lot of spyware etc.. will mess up your winsock info in the Windows Registry. Fortunately (with the exception of Windows XP) you can recreate the winsock registry keys without too much issue.

there are NO popups on this site. At all. If this is happening to you, it is most likely an issue of spyware being installed on your computer. I would suggest doing a search for a program called adaware. Run it and get rid of nasty pop-ups.

I get no money from advertising on this site. One thing I wanted to get away from with Yahoo.

When I had HotBar (cool SVX banners) I got popups like crazy, on any site. I could just run PopupStopper all the time, but getting shed of HotBar was better. I consider it my (never heard) statement to all those popup cads.
