Can't get rear-main seal in

Just like the title, I'm having a terrible time trying to get the rear main seal installed. I got one in but it was angled and way too deep. The next one I got in most of the way, but couldn't get it in that last 2mm or so, and it ripped with an improvised tool.

How in the world do you get it in there?

I have an aluminum underdrive pulley that is the perfect size.
The important things are to grease the seal on the lips and against the inner spring, and to grease the shaft itself.
To use a gray sealer on the outside of the seal.
To drive it in evanly.
And only to install it in flush.

I'm supposed to put ultra-gray RTV on the outside of the seal?

What kind of grease do you use? Like wheel bearing grease?

That would be fine.
