serious wiring problem
O.K. here's the problem. Apparently when my mechanic first put my 5mt in, he messed the left bank o2 sensor wiring up. I've put in 3 NEW o2 sensors in and the ecu says they are ALL dead. So, I have the bright idea to run NEW wires straight to the ecu. This is the tricky part. Does anybody know, or can someone draw me a diagram of which wires to tie into?

Well the only O2 wires that are in the ecu are on the connector plug with 22 slots. O2 1 wires are on terminal 6 for signal and 17 for sealed. O2 2# wires are on terminals 5 for signal and 17 for sealed. If you look straight at the plug the numbers start at the top right with 1 and go right to left. How is your car acting? Did you check the relays?

it's spitting and sputtering when I give it some gas. as long as I ease on the gas, the car acts fine. If I give it any throttle at all. It acts like it's flooding out.

Do you get a check engine lite?

that's the weird thing. no CEL. but when I check, I get codes: 23 / 33 / 37 / 38 torque control - im not worried about (5mt) left bank o2 and maf. now thats a different story. especially since they are new from a parts store.

Since doing this have you cleared the codes each time then have them set again? If not, do that. If I remember correctly, there's a TSB out on this specifically.

I've cleared the codes using the manual method. The codes keep coming back. I'm starting to wonder if my ecu is going bad on me.

If the MAF is giving a bad signal, it is likely messing with your fuel delivery. If it's causing the engine to dump massive amounts of fuel, this could explain both the 02 sensors failing quickly.
I would look there first and correct whatever is causing that code, then move on to the 02 sensor. Edit: Confusing threads here...need more caffine to wake up... |

Sometimes we have...
big problem differentiating between the real problem and the unrelated symptoms. The last 2 months I have been desparately trying to analize my problems with a car that:
Starts easy! Runs great! And suddenly sounds and feels like half the engine falls off. I got a 37 code and immediately replaced the correct 02 sensor. Got in the car, started it up. Ran great! problem solved. Road tested it and a happy camper! 2 miles later...Disaster strikes again Back to square one. Snow was coming and my unheated garage looked less inviting all the time si I took it to a Subaru dealer. The new Subaru loaner was better than renting a car and spending my time in the cold garage. As they began to try to solve the problem, I became more certain that they would never work it out. Six weeks later, I brought the car home. conversation with Tom! One of the tom types... said to check the timing on the passenger side. Re: the passenger side out of time.... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know it sounds weird but I have heard of it before... its worth looking into TomsSVX Quote: Originally Posted by kwren would that allow the engine to start easy... run great for a while like a mile? and then go whacko? Looks like timing would be bad all the time?? Just wondering, trying to understand it. Thanks for your help, Keith Tom was right! Still, In my case, the timing belt was in all the right places, so not an easy diagnosis, as the dealer found out. They ended up after keeping the car 6 weeks, not having a clue. On the passenger side the where the sprocket is bolted to the cam shaft was rusted out and had slipped, throwing the bank out of time. Looked great with the belt all lined up but wasn't. Replaced the cam shaft and sprocket and now a happy camper! Car runs great!!! Moral of this story... I understand that we are "blessed" wit a smart car that has a limp home mode in the computer. Be careful not to try only to only analyze the symptoms that are present in the "limp home" mode. When we get a weird result, might want to check if timing is all correct? Keith p.s.
