over heating

Hey guys its been a while! I have an issue with my inlaws subaru with the 2.2 in it. he over heated and I found a crack in the radaitor. I replaced it and took it for a spin. it was fine untill I took it out on the main street and got into it. it over heated. so I replaced the t-stat and the problem was the same. The upper hose gets hot and a ton of pressure but the lower stays cold. Like there is a block of the flow. I used a HG tester and it showed to be good. The car seems to push the coolant into the over flow. I am stumped! I have never seen this in my 14 years of being an auto tech!!! any good ideas?

tony

Hi Tony,

You say “I replaced it (radiator)”. Also, “Like there is a block of the flow.”

Trust your judgement and get crotchety towards the vendor of the replacement radiator.

Cheers, Trevor.

Trevor, I have already done that, on both the t-stat and the radiator! I pulled the pump and it turned freely, but the t-belt had alot of slack, Im pissing in the wind but I was thinking if the belt is lose due to a bad tensioner, could the water pump pully slip and not turn on higer RPMs?... like i said im pissing in the wind now!

Your current method of urinating confirms your wisdom, as you obviously refrain from pissing INTO the wind. Therefore all will come right . Been there having sailed my own boat.

<<so I replaced the t-stat and the problem was the same. >>

did you drain and replace all the coolant? how did you re-fill the coolant?

i bet theres a air pocket in the coolant system.

I had this same problem going on for weeks. I didn't fill the block before I filled the radiator and I had this massive air pocket that wouldnt boil out.

I redrained it, filled the block all the way until it was towards the top of the hose, then filled the radiator. Let the car run for like half an hour and alllll the air bubbles finally boiled out.

I haven't had the problem since.

When I replaced my radiator the same thing happened to me. I about shat myself when my temp gauage was reading hot. But fortunately thanks to people on here, I read that there could be a pocket of air and after adding some coolent problem went away.
