I had the occassion recently to be starring at two different flex plates, one on my old engine and one on my new old engine. I tried to loosen the bolts on the old one. I had no movement at all. The bolts are really tight. The SM calls for a special tool to hold the flexplate while loosening the bolts. I think even that may over stress the plate. I left it alone.

I also noticed a variation from the new to the old engine. The newer engine had about an 1/8 gap between the the TC and Flexpate after it was lined up. Considering that a few owners had these break, I have to agree it has weak spots around the four bolt holes and can crack in that area if not assembled or dissassembled properly when taken out the trans.

I primary cause would be if the plate got bent.

Have you had your transmission out?

It also has to come out for rear crank seal replacement and for a leaking oil separator gasket.

It is the last part on the back of the engine and the SM calls it the "Drive Plate"

They have it listed under the flywheel
