1990-1998. If you really wanna swap, get one from 1998 I guess. It's pretty popular to use a 4.44 final ratio transmission from later model year Subies (though I'm not sure what models have what final gear).

4.44 is pretty much only found in the Outback. 4.11 is pretty good and it can be found on most non-turbo automatic Legacy's and some manual 2.5RS's.

The Legacy GT, and Legacy Outback, and Impreza RS with an automatic have4.44's (as do some Foresters I believe) the regular Legacy, and Impreza's came with ither 4.11's, or 3.90's

Any Auto tranny you install from a different Subaru WILL require a gear swap in the rear diff, as only the SVX came with the 3.54 final drive ratio

Hope this helps

My mistake

I always forget which ones got the 4.44. Why can't they all just come with the same thing!?

Better listen to Huck, he's always right on these things.

Which Rear to Modify?

I've found instructions for swapping the higher ratio gears into the SVX differential and for adding the Limited Slip bits into the higher ratio differential.
Which method is better and why?
