Inner tie-rods are parts 4 and 5 here:

Reference 1

As for half shafts (axles) look for remans eg. http://raxles.com/ as the Subaru ones are way too expensive. Some remans even have lifetime warranties.

I don't understand your request. That's what I pointed out to you. The inners cost the same as the outers ($38.06)

I would think that 2 and 3 are the outer tie rod ends. It's almost always these ones that need replacing.

What are the symptoms?

The problem was discovered during inspection and now I need to have the "inner tie rod ends" replaced for it to pass. Mechanic says he found them for $140 each, so I dont understand why they are under $40 on subaruparts.com. Car shakes sometimes, steering wheel and car..(not during breaking). Then it will just stop....it's pretty random. So I'm not quite sure what to do here....

Mine did that for a bit too. My cause was a bad ball joint.

I don't know what causes the vibration, but right now I'm worried about passing my overdue inspection and making the garage happy by meeting their requirment of new inner tie rod ends..So back to this again,,,what ARE the inner tie rod ends?

The inner tie rods (the tie rods closest to the rack) are #4 and #5. The outer tie rods, like the name implies, are further away from the rack, #2 and #3.

OK that helps alittle bit, but I'm still confused about the ENDs..are the ends attached to the ends or are the rods and the ends separate..if I ordered parts 4 and 5 would that make the mechanic happy by getting new "inner tie rod ends"?

Yes. Technically they are called "inner tie rods" and not "inner tie rod ends." That is what makes your question confusing.

No problem

Maybe his price included labor?
