I personally use Meguiars Liquid Cleaner-Wax. What any wax be it paste or liquid does is remove a thin layer of material off of the surface and then harden into a new layer of protection. In a perfect world, the material you clean off would be old wax, but in the days of less time and more acid rain, the material tends to be your clear coat. Don't worry, it would take you decades to wear through the clear coat.

My long winded point is use what ever is easiest for you. The main thing is to do it often. Paste wax used to build up, but with the harder clear coats, the wax today has more abrasives in it and will remove the old wax (if nature doesn't).

I went for two years without waxing my car do to laziness and other mental instabilities (no comments from the peanut gallery) and when I finally did, It made so little improvement, that I had to wax it every other week since to return it to a decent finish.

Nothing can tone up your forearms faster than a can of 3 year old Classic Car Wax (paste), a bunch of clean turkish towels and a newly washed car. Unless of couse you are trying to slice a 3 week old bagel in half using a butter knife.

That, of course, would be JOHNSONS'S paste wax.

I've been a walking ... no, rolling billboard for Zymol for many years now and swear by their products the way Blonde_Man swears by Level Ten. Anything that can wax a 1/16 scale model car with very sensitive Testor's paint can't be all bad for a real car, I reasoned. This has turned out to be the case.

If you'd like to give them a try, check them out at http://www.zymol.com They have waxes tailored to specific makes and applications, such as a wax for flexible and plastic parts that I use on the front and rear bumpers, wing and trunk, c-pillars and mirrors. They also have waxes for light and dark colored cars and for Japanese, Italian, SUV, etc., etc. They make liquid waxes, but I prefer their paste waxes. Hope this is helpful.

And Larry was right; if you want forearms the size of tree trunks, waxing by hand using a paste is a good way to start.

commercial

This is another commercial for www.griotsgarage.com I recently started using some of their car care products, waxes, buffer, polishes, and am really happy with them. They have all the stuff you'd love to waste( I mean invest in) your cash on to care for your car.

Meguiars Gold Class liquid wax is the best stuff I have ever used. The reflections off my car are amazing. They also make a tire finish gel in the same line that has just the right amount of gloss for my tastes (not too shiny) and lasts for quite a long time.

I'm also a fan of the Meguiar's products. I was sold on them when I had my Spitfire. The rubber bumper cleaner was the best stuff I'd ever seen. A friend of mine who worked at the factory in TN gave me some. He actually got fired from the factory but still stood behind the products as the best made. I can't find the bumper cleaner anymore, but then, I don't have the Spitfire nor the need to keep the black plastic bumpers clean. I do the "three step" prescription (go to their website, and they'll give you a "prescription" for your area's conditions). I start with the paint cleaner, then the polish, then the wax. I use the "shampoo" to wash the car with. I haven't tried the tire gel yet, but, will do that very soon. I hate the Castrol tire shine product that I'm currently using. Love their oil and filters, but, they need to stay away from diversifying -- stick with what you know Castrol.

I tried Zymol a month ago. I am sold. I like this wax. It lasts a long time and the dirt and tar does not stick to the car!
