final drive question (I think)
I don't understand all I know about this subject, which is actually nothing
I don't have the #'s off the top of my head but I think it is a change from 3. something to a 4. something final drive? Is that something that the rear end thingie is all about and... a good a good thing for us... and if so why? Is it just done for a transmission change from auto to manual? Is it a thing for any advantage with automatic transmissions? Would running 225/45/16's be a good idea with our cars stock automatic transmissions? I nope with this many questions, just about anyone that reads this will know the answer to at least one of them All help appreciated as always, Keith |

Re: final drive question (I think)
Hi Keith, there was a discussion on the 'whys and such' of lower gearing here;
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...t=46226&page=3 Might answer some of your questions. Harvey.

Re: final drive question (I think)
Thanks!
I am considering the different size tire when I replace the 225/50/16 instead of the 17 or 18 inch wheels. 225/45/16. The new size would give me a lower profile sidewall and should add to the stability around curves with less sidewall roll. From It's good in that it makes less work for the transmission and generates less heat. Bad in that it raises your cruising RPMs, they aren't great for long cruising (which is what the SVX was built for) Odepaj, This 225/45/16 tire size change would take ,4, almost 1/2 inch off the highth of the sidewall and when the spedo reads 60 would actually be going 58 ish 57.9! Not much affect on our cruising speed . I assume the ride would be a tad less comfortable and stiffer. I think I would like the look of the shorter sidewall. I am just kicking it around, but I might just try it. Discount tires will let us do a test and if I wanted to go back to 225/50/16 or put on my new 18 inch wheels with 215/40/18 (different offset might be a problem with regular width tires... Nissan Murano.) Do not want to roll the fenders Like their commercial, I could either "bring it back" to Discount tire or possible find the little old lady in their commercials and get her to "bring it back" Any input on the idea and if I missed something here, please respond! Thanks, Keith Last edited by kwren; 10-28-2008 at 09:20 PM. |
