What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
After I removed the timing belt I checked all the pulleys for slop or rattle. All were solid but, a lower idler pulley so I pulled it. All the pulleys I removed to get at the oil pump were tight, too tight I think. Here are some pictures of the stuff that came out of the bolt hole wrapped around the bolt threads:
I first thought it was thread lock. It looks like aluminum, it's silver and acts like metal, a baby coil spring with pieces. Is it threads from the hole? I put the pulley back on after I cleaned the bolt, the bolt snugged right up and the pulley did not rattle, it was solid. Should I use thread lock on the pulley bolts when I put every thing back together? There is a piece above the oil pump that has what I think are 2 crank sensors, do I need to remove it to get the oil pump out?

that really looks like aluminum shavings..swarf as we call it at work....
i think you might have stripped the block?

What about: the bolt tightened up nicely after removing the stuff on the bolt threads? I don't think the hole is stripped, cause the the re-insursion of the bolt was good. If material was removed from the hole, would thread lock help in replacing that material? Define "swarf":confused :

Re: What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
That sure looks like aluminum shavings...
Try to pry the new bolt out a bit after threading it in... if you can pry it out, that is block, and you need to heli-coil it.

Re: What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
Maybe it was striped previously, drilled and tapped.
I have heard of that being done and screwing in an insert that matches the correct bolt threads. could have been enough of the metal stuff that didn't come out to hold the bolt in tight. Did you torque the bolts? If this makes no sense, it is because I don't understand all I know about it. Keith |

Re: What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
That's it, someone already heli-coiled it!

That was what I was trying to say! |

Remember, when I put the bolt back in, the pulley snugged up nicely, I did not torque it then, afraid of stripping the hole. Anyone experienced this?????

Re: What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
i don't think you need to helicoil it again. it's been done already for the size bolt you have. i am not sure if thread lock is a good idea either..just make sure you dont over-torque it on the install ~
a little more than snug should be good enough

Re: What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
That's what I'm thinking since the bolt snugged up nicely after I took the stuff off the threads. I'm still thinking thread lock added here would be beneficial, come on experts, join in......and, THANKS everyone that has posted here.

Re: What is this stuff on a pulley bolt?
Well, sometimes it works out to be naive, the bolt/bolt hole that is assumed to have been heli-coiled was in a reman water pump, now, Autozone can deal with it.. The threads in the new reman water pump look very good

Funny! But we all did get a lot of mileage out of that water pump!! Life should always be a learning experience for all of us... and... It is!! Keith Last edited by kwren; 07-27-2008 at 09:20 PM. |
