What's the point of Blue Book?

How much good is the blue book? (Kelley, NADA, etc.) It's been my experience from buying 4 SVXi in two years (along with several other cars), and reading about others' buying experiences here seems to indicate that SVXi rarely trade hands for "book value". So what good is the book if it doesn't accurately reflect the reality of the market? Is it just a tool for dealers to use for their advantage?
