Exclamation No forward movement

I am posting this for someone not on this forum yet but I told him about it so he should be signing up.

Now, he has a 96 or 97 model car (he's not completely sure) and it was imported to the Phillipines in 2001 he said, and he currently owns it now. The car has 60k (not sure if it is km or miles) and had not been used since 2005. He fried his previous transmission because his pan gasket failed and it dried up frying the trans. He had his transmission rebuilt with all new OEM mechanical parts. Now he is left with the problem of Reverse working but the forward gears do not work at all. But, he says that if they unplug the TCU, it will move the wheels in forward.
Right now, I am trying to get him to check if it is for sure a 96/97 model for the fact if it is OBDII or not. I told him that his mechanic (I would think) should have a reader and could get the codes which would be the case if there is wiring or something that got cut to cause there to be no forward. I also told him that if it is a 95 model or older, it is possible for him to get the codes himself without a reader. My thought process is that it is probably a solenoid that is bad or wiring is cut, torn, etc.
Just trying to help him get a jump start and help from the more experienced members on the forum...
