Blowin' smoke...

Ron,
I have a very slow leak in a pump seal. Oil finds its way back to the exaust header and gives me a smoke smell, but not enought to make clouds. The stain is very easy to follow, when the car is up on a lift. To quote my mechanic...."Its a tiny leak. Oil is cheap...replacing the seal isn't.." I have rid myself of the smell by directing the pressure wand at the car wash up underneath toward the offending area... Don

Will do Ron

Todd sounds like a mechanically smart sort of guy. I hope to have a complete diagnosis done while he is here, as I ply him with Cracklin Rose.

Or whiskey

Or whatever it takes.

Joe

Thanks, Don, I shall attempt to get my pressure wand properly oriented. Those tiny leaks are SO annoying.

Drip-dry Ron.

Good idea Joe. Get him all likkered up, & then have him change your plugs. This I'd like to watch.

Ron.

Likkered and all-sorts

Ron,

I said diagnosis

Down through the years I have learned not to plug or unplug anything with drink taken. Call it the "Morning After" philosophy.

Power Steering?

Is it possible that the power steering was leeking? I know the resevoir is not the most air tight thing. Assuming the grade where steep enough the fluid would lean in the resevoir after a time leek and drip down into the HOT engine and need to burnt off: thus leaving you with smoke and an annoyed feeling but all in all no worries because once horizontal no more leek>>>??????

Hmmmm... I guess any escaping petroleum based fluid could have been the culprit. Only way to find out is to climb the mountain again with a team of mechanics in tow to instantly diagnose.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Ron.

Ron, found this at the redline site...

maybe your tranny was frothing out the filler tube....

"Synthetic High-Temp ATF provides the gear protection of a GL-4 gear oil in an ATF and provides a higher viscosity at higher operating temperatures, allowing the transmission to operate at 70°F higher temperature and still provide the optimal shiftability and improved torque converter efficiency. The evaporation characteristics are significantly improved, being twice as good as our Synthetic ATF and five-times better than a petroleum ATF. The improved thermal stability significantly reduces the rapid evaporation of the ATF which can produce a frothing out the filler tube. "

They had more words, but I only cut enough to make it understood. SVXs being know for heat, and you climbing a hill...seems ripe for frothing to me.

There was nothing VISIBLE at the tube when I pulled the stick to check the level. Just wondered though, if the fluid gets hot enough to froth, isn't it close to burning, thus ruined?

Ron.

Ron,

Frothing and Burning are caused by 2 different mechanisms. You are thinking of Boiling which causes bubbles to form. Frothing is not usually caused by this.

But aren't the mechanisms both heat related? When does frothing occur vs. boiling?

Frothing at the mouth - Ron.

I'm having a similar problem. I have determined it must be oil from one of the cam seals on the left (driver). or it could maybe be the crank. I just had to replace my crank pulley. The absorber in the middle just decided it didn't want to stay together... It may be normal for it at this age? I don't know. but I will hold oil responsible for now. If anyone knows how long it may take for a tech to replace these I would like to know. Do they really have to pull the engine for it? Would it be a better idea to have the whole thing rebuilt? Right now when it revs around 3000 for a while the check engine light comes on. So someone had mentioned something about oil maybe getting on the crank sensor... Why at just this speed?

Thanks, Mike

Frothing at the mouth - Ron.

Boiling is always heat induced. Frothing is only aeration. Excess heat can also be involved, but is not an absolute requirement.
