Re: SVX on TopGear website

Should be interesting...

I kinda like the idea of taping together an SVX and an MR2...

I've always wanted a RWD longitudinal subie-boxer powered SW20 MR2 coupe.

if it had window-in-a-window, and lots of features and a fast-but-graceful ride quality, with mid-engined handling balance with H6 power... Sounds fantastic.

Throw AVCS, and toyota's D4 direct injection, and Valvematic variable valve lift phasing technology on the EG block, and offer a turbocharged option... (EZ probably wouldn't handle a lot of pressure while still having a warrantable margin for failure...)

Say hello to the NSX successor that Honda refused to make...

Re: SVX on TopGear website

Wonder what market niche they are targeting. Z series BMW? Z series Nissan? TT Audi? which was the sort for the SVX. Or the "Tuner" Civic etc. market?

more like the Scion tC.

initially it was supposed to have 220hp, then 200hp, now 160hp. maybe by the time its out it will have 120hp. fail.

"Firstly, the power output. We should now expect the 086A’s FJ20 2000cc boxer four to produce 160PS, a good 40PS less than was previously quoted which is all due to stricter economy and emissions targets.

Re: SVX on TopGear website

I originally thought they were going after the Genesis Coupe with a lighter-weight competitor.

Now, with newer rumors, and lower horsepower, and lower weight targets, and the word "eco-car" being bandied about... I am not sure.

But unless it is a well equipped, sleek Grand Touring Sport coupe, it is no SVX.

It sounds more like it might replace a car that Top Gear forgot to mention in their article, which is a bit of a BIG omission... the 1997-1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS Coupe. Being in Great Britain, I can't imagine that they didn't get that car... plus a few grey-market WRX turbocharged imports that the US never saw.

Wouldn't surprise me if what we see is closer to a tarted-up economy-based sport coupe, much like the 2.5RS was above the base Impreza coupe of that generation. They were nice cars, and I am not trying to denegrate them... but it didn't exactly get SVX's purpose defined development, nor did a 2.5 NA engine, a hood scoop, and a rear spoiler really require it, for an already established Impreza coupe.

It sounds like this is going to be a coupe bodystyle, with RWD, built on the 08+ GR Impreza chassis. (which should have never been pulled off the table, let alone left off the table for so long...)

The sad thing is... the GR Impreza chassis is about the same size as the BL Legacy (2005-2009), and I've always thought the BL Legacy GT and 3.0R, with a dash of STI tuning, could have spawned a VERY nice SVX successor with 2.5 Turbo or EZ30-36 drivetrains, and a better cost base, by sharing a chassis with other Subaru lines.

But it doesn't sound like the Subaru/Toyota coupe is going up-market from the Impreza, but inline, or maybe even down-market compared to WRX...

Supposedly the Toyota version is going to again wear the name Celica... if that gives any clue as to what price and equipment point they are aiming at.

BTW, Landshark, where did you see that comment on the engine... I have read the jist of the power reduction... but I had not seen it referred to as an "FJ" family engine. It is interesting that they have departed the EJ/EG/EZ... naming scheme, and have moved on to "F", but going directly from EJ, to FJ.

I wonder if that is what they are calling the rumored new H4 engine family that is being based on a cut-down EZ block, with shorter cylinder pitch. As with the EZ being less over-engineered and less blatantly robust than the EG, I wonder if the FJ will be similarly less robust than EJ is, and what that means for turbocharging. Maybe they'll keep EJ and FJ parallel, EJs all with turbos, and FJ H4s, and EZ H6s strictly without them.

Re: SVX on TopGear website

Probably not look like that, no.

That looks like a 2-seater. Hot, certainly... small, though.

It will be interesting to see what Toyota, and Subaru think is attractive sporty car styling... given their track records.

Re: SVX on TopGear website

No argument from me there. Toyotas isn't much different, although probably more bland than weird, but still goofy... The new Matrix proves that.

Re: SVX on TopGear website

That is the FT-HS (IIRC)... concept car from a few years back... it might be the template for the future "supra" successor, which is theorized to possibly be a performance hybrid, if there can be such a thing... between the Subaru/Toyota coupe, and the Lexus LF-A.

I hope the Subaru/Toyota Coupe will look better than that car. I don't get the cow-catcher front end, and the japanese car companies focusing on front-peaked roofs, and blacked out A-pillars.

The FT-HS interior is pretty cool, though.
