chance to Buy SVx...waht do you think?

Hey guys,
In my area i have come accross the chance to buy a 92 Green SvX, decent overall body with some blemishes on the rear spoiler and rear bumber(not big) and needs a new transmission. Car still drives in first gear, so i can even get it home. The engine has 160k on it, looks good and belt has been done. I can get this car for a little over a grand. Say i buy it, what will a rebuilt tranny run me installed? ive heard anywhere from 18-2200 from a decent shop. You tihnk i should stear clear of this? I have a daily driver now, honda accord, and am looking for a project car as i miss my white SVX If you think it will seroisouyl be over 2400 then im probably out of my mind. any advice is welcomed. Also if the engine seems to be in good running order, waht happens if the timing belt blows? Will it blow the head as well or is it a non interference blow?
Thanks
phil

Phast,

Even if you spend 5K in repairs, you will have a great car for 6 grand.
You have to look at your personal finances. If you do not have $5 grand that is disposable, to allow for this car, don't buy it.

Just my 2 cents.

PS: If there is a dollar sign ($) key on the computer keyboard, why cant they put a cents sign key on it too ? Where are all you computer gurus out there?

well....

I dont have 5 gand in repairs right now. I have around 2400, with a bi weekly income of 600. So i could have a tranny in it by the end of the summer. Im looking at this as more of a prject car. I have a place to keep it, where ican work on small things while im saving......you tihnk its a bad idea?

You sound like you want it. High mileage items, ps pump, alternator, rack, water pump, crank seal, cam seals, rear bearings, tie rods, front axles.

How are the brake pads and rotor thickness?

Do you have a shop near by that has done SVX tranmissions?

How are the rear sturt mounts? Rust in the rear wheel wells?

For a G you could even make money as a parts car. Maybe. Has any of that stuff I memntioned above been replaced?

ya....

Car rusn good. has a rebuilt alternatior, new rear bearings(obviously) but within the last couple months i mean. Their is a slight hiss with the engine noise, i dont know if this is considered normal but my dads lumina has been hissing for a very long time. There is no loss of fluid at all on the car, its in excellent condition minus a ding and a odd paint patternt on the rear bumper, and a slight chip out of the wing. It looks reeaaaly good if you ask me. The leather on the driver side is a bit rough, but youll have that. It really does shine though. Well, im offering the guy 1200 cash, see if i can tempt him. Ill tell you guys how it goes.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the hiss could be the power steering pump. Right?

it is...thats where its coming form, but upon driving the car it goes away in about 5 minutes....odd but ok. I bough the car! I had no problem getting it home, just put it in 1st and drove it all the way home. No problem at all, it made quite a racket though. the car is beuatiful, ill have picks back soon. Though i dont know the name of the color for thecar, its a (fill in the blank for me plase) green 92, LSL, spoiler and all. Ill have picks to you soon enough. The engine is still strong, i gave it some gas on the way home and it pulls harder then my old svx....now, i need to figure outwhat is whong with the 2 windows that dont work, relay maybe?
