Overseas container garage

I have been throwing the idea of taking two 20' overseas containers, putting them side by side, welding them together and making a garage out of it. It seems it would be cheaper and stronger than a conventional stick frame. What do you guys think?

I thought of this a while back as I work in a international distribution center and see these things everyday. Yes they are hot as hell in summer but I would have windows and some sort of ventilation as well. As far as being watertight our company had one dropped into the water a few years back and it floated until they could get it out. It was a 40' fully loaded with electric motors and probably weighed in at 25 tons , I dont think leaking will be a problem

They would be ugly, but not a bad way to go if you could get a good buy on them.

I know there ugly but I dont see why vinyl siding and a conventional roof wouldnt make it look like a normal buiding Ive seen a few models on a german website but they are just painted and dont look that bad. Some countries are using these over conventional buildings. I considered buying three 20' and making the garage door on the side thus giving me a 20x24 space. These things have a hardwood floor in them so I wouldnt really need a concrete floor, just throwing some ideas around I guess. I came across a website a few months back and a 20' with fresh epoxy paint was going for $800 much cheaper than the local barn builders who want 20-25k for a similar sized building

You can put air conditioned units or cut a hole and put your own AC unit in. I know a few places in the world where people live in them.

Shipping containers.

I have used one of these for storage, they come liberally impregnated with salt and rusted away in two years.

it sunds like a good idea...lots of welding though . a big issue would be how high the roof would be. youll want a relativly tall roof for jacking a car up high enough to work on, as well as better air ventalation (mora air mass to fill with toxic fumes)
you could easilly cut holes and make vents, windows, ect. you may want to consider having one or two outward facing box fans to help vent it out.
Just curious...how much are the containers and how do you get them to your house?

I assume his boss would help him out with a truck if he was taking them.

This seems like a way of getting around building codes/zoning too.

A guy up the street from me has a steel garage with concrete foundation. If demon can pour a slab and throw vinyl on it, it would look pretty similar. The one up the street is behind his home but in a high dollar neighborhood (homes just across the street from him are in the millions) Its not an eye sore. You could probably even have a hvac unit on top of it. Attic vents/blowers up top should do the trick on venting it too right?

I thought about the height and you can get a high box version which is 9' I believe. Ive seen prices for a 20' at $800-1000 delivered so its comparable to a conventional garage, although a small one. Yes a lot of cutting and welding but this just an idea for now. I wouldnt have to pour a slab just a footer as the floors are usually some kind of hardwood. Buff and shine and my garage would have a killer floor I also think it would be less labor intensive as they would deliver to your site just put them close enough together or just ram it together 86 Ranger. Walls, floor ceiling, doors are in already and I would take my time cutting out the side and filling the gaps. I think it can be done for under 3k with the roof being made from sawmill lumber and you would have a solid floor for storage above the garage, they stack these things 20 high on some ships

It actually sonds like a damn good idea. I guess that you may want to pressure wash, rust treat, and paint the containers as soon as you get them to get off any salt / stop further rusting. I did a little research too, they have half height ones that are 4-4.5 feet, full sized ones are 8.5 - 9.5 feet tall. at 8 feet wide and 20 feet deep....Pretty decent sized garage. Not to mention that you would have 2x 20'x8'x9' sections from the sides you cut out to open it up. That can probly be recycled to make an overhang off the side to store stuff under like firewood or building supplies. Or hell even a place to park the car
