Need somemore help guys,

Sorry to be a pain but I'm pulling my hair out and I dont have thet much left to pull.

Just got off the phone from the place thats rebuilding my stock turbo and the guy says he doesn't think it's bad. He told me I better look at other things before spending the money on this. So whatelse is there to look at? I changed the pcv valve, plugs have been changed and a were not black. Car runs great. Only smokes at low speed or stopped, does not smoke on the highway, clears right up when it gets out on the highway.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Have you posted this identical question over on the XT/XT6 board? They might be able to help. I have very limited knowledge of the turbo XT's...

Yeah I just did, :)

It smokes out the exhaust so bad that you can't see behind it and it does it when it's at idle or comming off it. When it's on the highway it stops smoking. It's using oil now cause it's blowing it out the exhaust. Cant post any pictures because car is in my garage with the turbo off in the shop. The exhaust wheel on the turbo is NOT oily. If you were to compare it to a spark plug color, it's about the light brown that you want your plugs to look like which by the way mine do. I can't find a reason for this. If I had a broken ring I would think it would keep smoking and not clear up at highway speed. He hasn't pulled apart the turbo yet to see what it looks like on the compressor side but he says it has no play either direction so he doesn't think it's bad. He said to call him in a day and he will take the compressor side apart and look. He also said something about checking the oil drain. I'm guess thats the hose I had a heck of a time getting the clamp off down by the oil pan. I will run a wire down that fitting tonight when I get home. One other thing I have noticed is my oil dip stick rides about ½ inch out of the tube also. The silver alum intake that connects to the rubber hose is not oily either nor is the butterfly when you look down the intake. So how is the oil getting in?

I'd wait to hear what he finds when he takes the turbo apart....

Yeah probably a good idea

I will look at pvc hoses and the turbo drain hose when I get home.
Everyone is saying the worse but the car runs to dam good to be that plus
if it was rings or valves I dont think it would stop. This thing will smoke so bad you cant see whats behind me and then it will clear up. It also doesn't always do it when stopped. It's a stumper I tell ya.

So what other motor swaps can be done in a XT?

Any Subaru 4 cylinder will fit in it, with an adaptor plate (or new gen tranny)

Is it a manual? I forget...

And even the NA EJ18 has as much HP as the EA82T stock, so a EJ22 would really bring it alive.....but if you want really fast, a WRX motor, or STi motor could be swapped in

If it is pushing the dipstick up, it either has a broken ring or a hole in a piston. I started working on cars in 1964, and that has been the most consistant problem that causes the symtoms you discribe.
A new 2.5 from a junkyard would be the best route. Have you ran a compression test on it? How about a 'leak-down' test? That is where you put an air coupler on something that has the same threads as your spark plug, and apply about 25 PSI air to each cylender. pull the dipstick, air filter, and oil fill plug and listen to the sound of each hole as the air goes in. Check each piston seperately, with all plugs removed. If the air goes to another plug hole, it's a head gasket.
You have to turn the engine till all valves on the cylender you are working on are closed for this to work. A good subi book will tell you how to do this, it's the same thing as adjusting the valves.

If it comes out the oil filler or dipstick hole, it is piston related, if it comes out the air filter hole, or exhaust pipe , it is valve related.
all other things considered, subi's are using the same physics that Daimler-Benz pattented in 1890's

Well I did some more snooping last night and,

PVC hoses look clean with some trace of oil and alittle buildup in one.
The alum piece that connects the turbo to the intake has oil in it and the intake has oil in it. I'm thinking the seal in the turbo is bad and when the car comes off acceleration the vacuum is sucking oil past the seal and it smokes. When I step on it the pressure bleeds the other way and my oil dip stick pops to vent. Sounds right to me anyway. Will have to see what the turbo guy says for sure. Car runs to good to have any other issues but you just never know.

The car has 130,000 on it and I'm sure rings are wore and so forth but the way this came about would suggest something just went.

Will see what the turbo guy says. I'm not ready to give up yet and the next week here is supposed to be around freezing and not much for snow so I can keep driving the SVX.
