I'm afraid that if you look deeper, you will find that more abuse it than use it. You need to include the not for profit SSI and W-2 agencies that the states hire to disperse the aid. There was one in Milwaukee last year that closed because of a financial scandal. Deeper investigations showed that throughout its existence, this agency has had mid six-figure administrators and a consumption rate of almost 80%. That means that only 20% of the money they took from the taxpayers actually went to aid the people in need.

Unfortunately, this place only closed because they were caught red-handed. There are many other organizations that operate on the same scale and they just haven't been caught yet. There is no performance clause in these organizations and the press is very hesitant to investigate minority run aid programs.

If the tax dollars marked to help the poor actually went to the poor, there wouldn't be any poor.

I believe the officers had a right to loot for food, water, medicine etc. Its a matter of survival and you have to take into consideration that the officers had probaly lost everything also. Looting for survival is ok in my opinion as the government on all levels has failed local state and federal. Looting for TVs DVDs and the such you should get a bullet in your a$$ and left as you are compounding the problem for law enforcement and rescuers. Its apparent our government is ill prepared for a major disaster. What the hell every happened to Civil Defense?? The general population actually having drills for attacks and storms is unthinkable today as we have handed that responsibility to our government and they failed. The world is watching as the most powerful nation in the world is ailing to cope with this. Everyone should be prepared to defend and survive for something like this or other disaster.

First Doug, you are absolutely right. Second, handing ANYONE's well being over to the government is a socialist agenda and not one this administration or me in particular wants. I don't think it's the Federal governments job or responsibility to take care of my well being. New Orleans and Louisiana were the ones responsible to make sure it's residents were safe. That's why there is State and local government supported by taxes. New Orleans decided to neglect levy constrction and maintenence. New Orleans decided to hire anyone in Law Enforcement with a pulse. Louisiana EMA decided to prolong evacuation to the last 3 days when the storm tracker on CNN had it hitting the Gulf Coast 5 days before EMA even made a press release. You know who is responsible to look out for you? You. That's the problem with the mass welfare recepients. They sit around waiting for a check. It is a situation that has been handed down generation to generation since the 60's. In the hispanic culture in this country, at least those on welfare, 15 year old or younger girls get pregnant and the grandmother takes care of the kid, because when they were pregnant that's how it worked. I have met 30 year old grandmothers. I also can't begin to count how many times I have been in federal housing and seen women with 4 kids form 3 or 4 different men and sit at home watching big screen TV's and driving Cadillacs while paying $200 a month in rent. Social reform is the biggest obstacle in this country.

I've seen it too. Caddillacs, $500 hair weaves, satellite and cable TV, fancy clothes and gold jewelry, all on a W2 check. We also have tons of 30 year old grandmothers around here too. Breaking the cycle of dependency is rough when you have a union run public school system that is only graduating 2% of its African-American Males and 15% of African American Females. Where are these people going to get money without a high school education?

Hey, as long as the students show up for the free food day when the government checkers are there to count the number of students "enrolled" for tax payment calculations.

just my 2 cents

They will never go back down to $2.25, that's for sure. My prediction is $2.45 would be the best we could hope for. But if Rita hurts the drilling rigs or the processing plants, it could be worse in the short term.

However, a far more important factor is the value (or lack thereof) of the us dollar. The reason gas when from $1.15 to $2+ in 2 years is that the US dollar was (and still is) dying. If you look at the price of gas in euros, you find it was pretty stable for that first year, and only in the past year has it gone off that standard. I think they are pricing it in Gold or swiss francs now. But the main reasons gas is so expensive is not the hurricanes:

It's the demand by china.
It's the devaluation of the US dollar.

The US needs to get out of the war or start profitting from it. That's why the US dollar has fallen. Bombs don't generate money, they cost money. If Iraq can get it's act together and IF the US can gain business from it (which is why were were there in the first place) and if Iraq oil can be sold to the US at a discount, then yes, the price can come back down. But that's a lot of "ifs."

The hurricanes are fairly minor factors, but will effect the price of gasoline. But the war, china and the US dollar are major factors and effect the price of crude oil.
