Question Dipstick

It seems that every time I open the hood, I find that the oil dipstick has crept up abut 1 inch. I push it down each time, and find it up the next time I open the hood. I don't know that it is up far enough for water or dust to get into the tube, but it still bothers me to see that it is not down tight. When I have seen others open their hoods, I have seen other dipsticks that are in the same position. I am starting to think that this is a common problem, or occurance. Does anyone else have the same thing happen, or am I over reacting. I could just ignor it and hope it goes away, but I doubt that will happen.

Unhappy

SVXcess (John) has the same problem & mine's beginning to pop sometimes. Could be the little O-ring wearing out.
Ron.

Dijon vu - didn't I have that mustard before?

I think someone had an explanation and a solution for this problem somewhere (probably in Yahoo) but someone else will have to find it.

Just wait - it'll show up eventually.

Yes, I noticed that there seems to be a little O ring on the dipstick. I wondered if that needed to be replaced so it might make a better seal or create more friction. I don't know if that would do it or not. I'll watch for "THE ANSWER".

The first thing to check is that your PCV valve is operating correctly. It's a pain in the butt to get to, but, that's the first thing to check.

Otherwise, yes, it's the little o-ring on the dipstick (from experience). I busted mine trying to take it off to find an o-ring in my box-o-goodies of things in my garage. Couldn't find one. "I'm screwed" I thought. Then, I noticed that fuel line is about the same circumfrence as the o-ring. I sliced off a piece of fuel hose of the same width as the notch in the dipstick and rolled it into place. I nearly have to get into the engine bay and pry the thing out now. Working like a charm now for more than 10K miles.

Mine does this, too. Replace the o-ring if you want. Replace the PCV valve. But the real ANSWER is to wait until spring. Mine only seems to do it in winter.

see in the winter the cold makes the o ring (probably rubber)contract a bit. similar to the hood strut situation. i've have a squeek in the front end of my infinity for about 5 years now. my mechanic said something like "well, you can spend a few hundred bucks replacing rubber parts in the front end until we get the right one, or you can throw some silicone lube on it and wait till spring. spring, ahhhhhhhhh spring. maybe we should all move to lousianna or florida, eat stone crabs or crawdads and forget this awd stuff!

I had the pop-up dipstick syndrome. I ordered a new one form my dealer and comes with a new o-ring. The o-ring had turned from rubber to a hard, brittle plastic from engine heat, and the dipstick handle had darkened as well.

I also ordered the o-ring to use on my old dipstick while waiting for the new one. The part number for the o-ring is 806908080 and is available separately, about a dollar.

Replacing the o-ring made a very snug seal so the dipstick stayed in place.

Replace the O ring -

OR we could all wait till spring, eat crabs, and spray silicone on our dipsticks.

But ---- there is another winter acomin'.
