Several of us have e-mailed Subaru over the years and we always get the same response "SVX does not stand for anything."

Safety Vehicle Xperimental, Specialty Vehicle X, Subaru Vehicle X, ........it's whatever you want it to be. My guess is that it doesn't stand for anything....someone just liked the way SVX sounds.

Dave (forget SVX, I want to know what Justy is supposed to mean!)
Dave, I worked for Subaru dealerships from 1983 till two and a half years ago. And at the many many meetings they (the factory reps,) told us that it stood for Safety Vehicle eXperimental. They,Subaru were "pushing safety and control'.
The "Justy" name, was just that, a name they thought the American public would to relate to, and like, and trust.

BTW, The original name for the Forester was going to be "Streetga".

I called the Subaru factory here in Gunma, Japan and they confirmed 'Subaru Vehicle X' as the meaning of SVX. They also e mailed me the complete list of Subaru vehicles and their meanings. Such helpful people.

It is in Japanese and includes a lot of JDM only models, but here is a translation of the more common models:

LEGACY: From the English word 'Legacy' meaning something great handed down to another generation. As this was a new major model for Subaru, the Legacy name reflected their hope of a great car which would continue to be improved, refined and admired for generations to come.

IMPREZA: From the English word 'Impresa' meaning crest or motto.

FORESTER: English word meaning people who live in a forest!

JUSTY: From the English word 'Just' meaning exactly/precisely. Conveys the meaning of 'just the right size car', not too big, not too small.

DOMINGO (JDM) Spanish meaning Sunday, because when you drive this car 'you will have the relaxed feeling of a Sunday!'

Let me know if you want anymore translated.
