Unhappy just got in an accident

Well, I just got in my first accident with my SVX. A guy in a '98 honda decided to make a left into oncoming traffic, so I hit him on my front bumper, his front corner. Now I have a small hole in my bumper, a few scratches and a lot of his paint and he has some nice body damage. Could've been worse considering I was braking from 30 and he was speeding up from a stop when we hit.

Anyone know a good bodyshop? The guy wants to pay out of pocket, I don't know if I should go along with it.

sigh

Don't go along with it, get your insurance company involved, cause he probably doesn't have insurance.

Also watch out for your insurance company, they may try to total your car.

Well, the damage is minor enough that if the accident had been my fault, I'd probably just put a bra on and ignore it, but since it's clearly his fault, it's getting fixed. I don't know if I'll need a new bumper (any idea what those cost?), but nothing else seems damaged. I got full contact/insurance info of course, so I can delay the decision of whether or not to report for a few days. This hasn't been the best start to a new year, I just got her back from the shop for a new ps hose and an oil leak that remains a mystery.

I don't think I would do it either. You have no recourse if he backs out. Make sure there is an accident report too. Good luck. Sorry to hear that.

Well, I'd prefer to give him a chance to pay out-of-pocket, since I don't want my rates going up.

Your rates shouldn't go up. Only if you were at fault. But on the other hand, I know how the insurance companies work.

If it was me I'd tell him I didn't like that idea and the only way I'd go along is if I got an estimate and he gave me that much plus a little more because body repair always gets more expensive after it's done, then buy used parts from the guys on this site and take the parts to the body shop to have them do the work...

I was hit in my Vanagon last November and got $2880 for it, I origionally paid $2000, I bought a new one for $1500, I'll sell the wheels for $400+ (already have nice alloys) put my spare engine in the new one, sell the old one for $800 after pulling $300 in stereo equipment that came with it out and walk away from the ordeal with a newer vanagon and another SVX The moral is insurance companies can be hard to beat, but if you play your cards right you can come out ahead...

Well, they decided they can't afford their own repairs so they're using their comprehensive insurance. Their agent said he didn't need a statement from me, because "based on what our guys said, we're dead."

Well, I already beat his Accord, he took most of the 30mph impact.

Now I just need to pick a shop. Their insurance will cough up the cash for a rental too.

Hey people,

Sorry I haven't been around much. My friend was visitng for 2 weeks and then I'm still in the middle of applying to graduate school... Basically, I'm I have no real excuses Sorry! So, what's been going on lately? Man, snow driving is so much fun

-Nick

p.s. Aly, when I had my car bumped into I got a check for $2000. You can tell the guy's insurance you want a cash-out. that way you can get your car fixed cheaper and do some other repairs or just call me and we can finish off the money drinking somewhere

Totaled SVX

It was brought up earlier to be careful the insurance company doesn't total the SVX.

That brings up an interesting question, at least for me. What if your car received some minor damage, similar to Aly's, and you made a claim with your insurance company. With the high price of SVX parts, and the low values of the car as a whole now, assume the insurance company decides to total it out. Would you be able to back out of the claim, deciding to just fix the damage with the cheaper methods we are privy too, or are you pretty much stuck because you made the claim?

Just curious for future reference, when my car got hit in a parking lot a few years ago they were nice enough to leave a note and already have it all worked out with their insurance before I even had a chance to call. But always wondering what would happen if something similar happened with no note and I had to make a claim on my own insurance.....
