Unhappy Snap-on in the news.

They called us in for an emergency (?) meeting yesterday. Our plant (been here since 1937) will begin 'phase-out transition' on or about October 1st (the 20th would be my 28th work anniversary).

I'm not sure at this point how this will affect my relationship with Kermit. He needs a right rear wheel bearing (droning some, but not too loud yet), and has 80-plus thousand on his timing belt, 140,000 on everything else. Nothing really pressing right now, but any work will probably have to wait awhile. I recently acquired a Suzuki DR350SE, so if things do get worse, at least I have a ride.

Sorry to hear that Steve. You have to keep Kermit, even if you have to wait on the work. He is part of this institution!

This stuff kills me. I'm sorry to hear about the job man. I'm from a mill town in Mass. All the mills are closed. Do to all the work going to 3rd world countries.
We need to get smarter in this country. Living in NY I am always finding the yuppy guy making money shipping in chinees crap, Or Designers that design stuff here and produce it in the 3rd world.
It's disgusting. You may say that is business. That is b/s. We need to start paying more for clothes made in USA! It's getting harder and harder to find stuff made here. All of us have buying power. Unfortunately often times people don't care till it hits home.

When you go to Home Depot do you buy the Drill made in USA or do you buythe Riobe for half the price. I know what i do. Do you play golf on chinees balls or do you buy Tittlest made in Fairhaven MASS. unfortunately not enough do:theplant is closed moving to Mexico. Skilled labor in this country is hurting and I'm pissed!sick of .5% of this country thinking about itself. The other 99.5% can do something...don't buy it!

Sorry to hear that Steve,

They announced that the Kenosha Snap On Plant was closing immediately and that one in Mt. Carmel was going to be phased out, I immediately thought of you...

Snap on

Hi Steve, Well after the sadness and crying over all the times you woked extrs for nothing or went in on your day off , it's just a business decision. On the other hand, if you ever got paid for something you didn't do or got a raise when you were't do, etc, you can at least get a small grin over those. Hope you don't have to move, as randy will miss a close fellow SVX'er. I've had this happen twice and both times it was goodbye, you can get your check on the way out. Take care, BOBB

Thanks all, for the kind words.

Doug, I wasn't aware that Kenosha was closing immediately. I assumed they'd be on relatively the same timetable as us. That really stinks.

Actually, things have smelled rather fishy around here for some time. Deep down, we all knew we'd had it, just didn't know when. There's some whining, but I haven't seen any tears. It was a much better place to work before Snap-on became a holding company. In fact, I've been job-shopping for a couple of years, and at this time I'm No. 2 in line to be called for a state job. Unfortunately, I've been No. 2 for two years now because they haven't hired for that long. (I'm beginning to feel like no. 2. ) Rumor is that they'll be hiring soon though. I hope it's before my status runs out.

As far as buying American goes, I guess you can tell by my list of vehicles what I generally do. I think I've owned about two American-made vehicles in my life. Truth is though, I'd much rather buy a U.S. made Toyota or Subaru than a foreign made Ford or Chevrolet.

One of Snap-on's competitors (I forgot which) says it's goal is to make American-made tools as cheaply as the Chinese make their tools. To me, that says either slave labor or no labor.

Best of luck, Steve. I'm sure you will find something. When a door closes a window opens, at least that has been my experience. My company is on shakey ground and we are all hoping we do not go under. It's scary as hell when you have that much time invested in a company and the rug gets pulled out from under you. Let us know how things go.
