Engine block heater

Got a measure of its impact this morning. My water temp was at 69F when the air was 1F. It came up to normal operating temperature a lot faster and I felt better about getting started without a long warm up time.

We had a couple of -22°F nights this week. I was wishing all my vehicles had block heaters. It's much easier on the equipment and you get heat a lot faster. They start but they don't like it.

It didn't have trouble starting without it but I had one installed because it is better for the car when the temps get this low and I hate waiting forever for it to get warm enough to defrost the windows.

Volvo actually offers a Gasoline powered coolant heater made by Webasto for my S80. It has a timer and can be programmed to turn on before you get in your car in the morning, and it heats up the coolant to operating temperature so you have immediate heat. You can also have the blower in the car turn on so it will pre-heat the interior before you get in it. You can also use it to keep the coolant warm while you run into a store or something like that. I have considered it, but it is over 1200 euros, so that's not happening.

Subaru block heaters all look like this guy:



The normal installation is in the bottom of the engine block directly behind the water pump, where it replaces one of the block's frost plugs. That little coil inside the hollow heats up to warm the coolant. If you wanted to get serious about pre-warming your engine you could install two of these, one on each side of the engine, along with a heating blanket on the transmission pan.

Exactly! I attached my OBD2 reader and monitored the temperature. I was at 69F before it started. After starting it dropped quickly to 64F. I assume it was losing heat to some colder spots in the block. Once it starting to tick back up, I figured I was good to go. The car started better and I got heat quicker. I still drove like a granny until it reached normal operating temperature but at least I knew that the block was at a reasonable and somewhat uniform temperature before I started driving.

My old school local mechanic (as opposed to the old school WV mechanic) swears that they see a lot more head gasket jobs in the spring and summer following a harsh winter because people push their cars too hard before they are fully warmed up. I witness this behavior every day. People are in an awful hurry to get wherever they are going. Personally, I like to be aware of my surroundings and enjoy them as I take nice easy starts and stops as well as when I am cruising at a nice steady and reasonable speed. People miss their lives as they are trying to race through it in an effort to somehow prove something.
