Unhappy running on 4-5 cylinders

so on the way to work the engine just randomly drops cylinders. i do the self diag and get codes 22 28 37 and 14-19. after doing a visual inspection i find that the knock sensor on the left side has a big crack in the housing. i get the new sensor put it in and start the car, no change. i check the codes again now im getting codes 23, 24, and 14-17. i dont know what to do someone please help me

Re: running on 4-5 cylinders

not sure why it would throw a MAF code after replacing the knock sensor but not before

Re: running on 4-5 cylinders

Check the engine grounds. The fuel injectors, knock sensor, and bypass air valve all ground through the engine (not the MAF though). Not sure how likely it is to be the cause of this but it's free/easy to check, so might as well just to rule it out.

What I would do next is test the MAF, by unplugging it prior to starting the car and check if the car runs better or differently. A MAF on the way out can cause some weird behavior.

Then clear the codes by unplugging the battery for a while (like 10 mins should do it) and then see what codes come back. Also try it with the MAF unplugged and see how it does (unplugging the battery also causes the ECU to forget some of the things it's learned). When you unplug the MAF obviously it will throw a code for it, so if anytime you do that you should clear the codes so that when you check you will know if the MAF code is because you unplugged it or because it's actually giving a bad reading.

Re: running on 4-5 cylinders

Check engine coils for wires that have become brittle and possible causing issues. I had a coil do this to me and would randomly lose a cylinder on my old SVX.

Yes I agree, to get all the injectors, would have to be a ground. The O2 could be the result of the rest.
There is one on the right rear corner of the inlet manifold, and the one from the rear of the block to the firewall. And of course the body ground in front of the battery.

Harvey.

Re: running on 4-5 cylinders

well i just got home from work and tried starting the car with the MAF unplugged like icing said and it ran for a few seconds then died out. i started it with it plugged in and it ran then died when i unplugged it so i guess i can rule out the maf being the issue. ill try checking the coils and fuel injectors tomorrow morning before i go to work

If you unplug the MAF when the car is running, then of course it will die; the ECU stops seeing airflow, so stops injecting fuel. Starting up the car after unplugging the MAF means the ECU will ignore the MAF and use the other sensors and reference values to guess at the airflow. Like I said, reset the ECU and try again. You can't use this test to rule out the MAF as a problem, only confirm it (if the car runs better without the MAF than with it).

Re: running on 4-5 cylinders

it's probably not that it still has the codes stored but that they reset as soon as you turned it on. this is a good thing for finding out what is wrong because hard faults are much easier to find.

Re: running on 4-5 cylinders

After pulling thr plugs on the cylinders not firing I found oil on them. They still fire with them out of the engine in the coils blown engine?
