hid vs traditional filaments,

hey all, wondering your thoughts on the difference, do ya like bulbs or hids?

I have an HID kit, and I do like it, I used to have sylvania bulbs... seemed like more light.

What bulbs do you use? any that are really good? that surpase the hids, I feel the projectors may utilize them better, but im honestly not sure.

Re: hid vs traditional filaments,

I don't know about "better" than HIDs, but I've been very happy with HIR bulbs in 9012 (low) and 9011 (high) bulbs without the hassles I've read about with various HID "kits". Current bulbs are IIRC Toshiba.

Gas discharge headlamps still use bulbs, by the way. HID headlamps emit considerably more light than halogen headlamps. Is it possible that you had some stupid color temperature when you had your HID kit?

Re: hid vs traditional filaments,

I have 100 Watt, 8,000K Halogen bulbs in my lows and they look just as good as the HIDs in my RX-8.

Re: hid vs traditional filaments,

Any bulb at over 5000k is going to have decreased light output due to the fact that now the bulb is wasting energy on producing that color. The best lumen/color temperature is between 4500k and 5000k.

My 4500k 35w HID's put out nearly 3000 lumens which is almost double what the 9006 halogens put out. I'm very happy with my HID's.

Re: hid vs traditional filaments,

This video shows something I don't like about HID lighting, on the whole. That's the slow ignition of the lamp. I have HID's in my STS, the first of my cars to use such equipment, and when dimming high to low am not "comfortable", shall we say, with the slow response of the HID lamp. Is it just me? Old school perhaps?
I must admit, although cautioned my Daniel Stern, a lighting guru I trust knows a lumen from a watt, not to mess with lamps not intended for HID use, that the projector lamps in the SVX low-beam slots do seem to lend themselves nicely to the conversion.

Re: hid vs traditional filaments,

On my a4 that I added factory Xenon headlamps and housings to, the low beams stay on when the high beams are on to eliminate that problem. It seems as though that would make the most sense.
