Re-wrap the steering wheel

Has anyone ever tried to re-wrap their steering wheel? I am considering trying the leather touch up kit on ebay but I would prefer a nice new surface. I don't want to buy a new steering wheel for obvious reasons.

Also, how hard is it to remove the driver side door panel to replace the power window switches? The one for the passenger window isn't working.

Re: Re-wrap the steering wheel

I have used a kit from Wheel Skins and had excellent results. I leave the wheel just like it is and wrap the new part over the wheel. They come in many colors and you can choose what you like. Their porducts are very high quality.

The driver side door panel removal is so easy a caveman could do it. Theres what, maybe 4 or 5 screws (2 under the felt bottom of the pull handle) if I remember correctly. Then it pulls up and off, then you can unhook the electrical connections.

Do it right. http://www.craftcustoms.com/pages/Wh...witchboard.htm

They can even give you a wood and leather combo, matching it to your "wood" dash, using their Photogenesis technology.

Also, how hard is it to remove the driver side door panel to replace the power window switches? The one for the passenger window isn't working.

INSTRUCTIONS

Removing the door panel is easy. There are 5 screws.

Open the door and take out the 2 screws on the front edge of the door panel, near the door hinge.

There is another screw located under the door handle, hidden behind the plastic plate which justs pops out with a small-bladed screwdriver (preferably magnetic)

There are also 2 more screws hidden under the felt mat inside the door armrest. Just peel it away to expose the screws, These are the most important ones as they hold the entire armrest to the door frame. You cannot remove the panel with these screws in place.

Once all screws are removed, just pop the clips around the bottom of the door panel my pulling gently. Once free, lift the entire panel up slightly and pull away from the door frame to see the wiring. There are 2 electrical connectors that must be disconnected; one is for the switch cluster and one is for the door courtesy light.

Replacement is the reverse order. The only possible minor hassle is lining up the door lock button to slide into the door panel opening, but usually it is not a problem.

How is the color match? I have the beige color which, I think, is closest to their "sand" color. Maybe I should just go with black as black matches everything.

The tan is very close to our beige.

The hardest part is coughing up one hundred bucks for the replacement switch.

Yeah, I was tempted to get a quote but I think I need to get mentally prepared first.

Has anyone ever swapped in a steering wheel from another car like another Subaru?

Re: Re-wrap the steering wheel

People have swapped in WRX/STi and Legacy steering wheels, with varying results. There are a few threads around if you search a little. Even I had swapped in a 2002 LLBean Steering Wheel/WRX Airbag.

The common concern/question is the airbag. If you swap to a different model steering wheel, you will lose the functionality of your airbag. Connectors, and possibly voltage are different, and NOT to be messed with for obvious safety reasons.

How many interior colors were there in the SVX? I ask because their tan is a light to medium brown that they describe being close to a football. That is way browner than my interior which is a light beige. They call their sand a light beige. Maybe there were a couple of shades of beige in the SVX?

if this works correctly, this is a good picture of what my interior looks like:

Re: Re-wrap the steering wheel

There was only one shade of beige that Subaru used on the interiors.

I got a beige and red combination for my 93 and it looks great. I can't take a picture right now because I am not near the car, but if you want, I could do it this weekend.

I just checked and I got the sand color. You can request a swatch and they will send you one in the color so you can see how close of a match it is.

Sounds nice. Did the "side color" encompass the steering wheel spokes? I was thinking of a side color of black or tan or oak with the sand for the top and bottom. That way, the color that matches, but not perfectly, will not be in contact with the wheel itself but a color that is clearly not meant to match will be. I think they show a picture of the same idea for a Toyota steering wheel. I think I am going to go that route.
