Another Subie in the family

.

After 14 months and 53,000 miles, Trish decided she needed something more comfortable for her 110 mile daily commute. The 2009 Forester operated flawlessly, but the seats were not too supportative. Just prior to this, we replaced the tires with the Goodyear Tripletreds and I just got finished replacing the brake pads with Akebono ProACT ceramics.

The replacement vehicle is the 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limted. Azurite Blue Pearl with the Warm Ivory leather and every concievable option except Navigation. 440W harmon-Kardon Stereo with subwoofer, reclining rear seats, power everything, even "puddle lights"

This car is so smooth and quiet in its operation, it defies belief. The CVT transmission takes a little getting used to. It is gearless amd has a chain drive. There is no place to add fluid or even a dipstick. There are no gear changes and when climbing a hill or passing, the engine just revs higher; there is no downshift. This step-less gear ratio allows the car to run in its optimum range. No shifting also preserves the car's momentum.

In sportshift manual mode, the transmission is controlled with upshift and downshift paddle shifters on the steering wheel. In the manual mode it will stay in any one of 6 gears-- great for control in bad weather or descending steep hills. It also has specific mapping for each gear to maximize performance.

You can see a video of how this technology works in both AUTO and Manual modes HERE. The transmission of the future.

The new Outback is almost 600 pounds heavier than the Forester, but uses the same 2.5, 170hp 4-cylinder engine. The gas mileage is almost 5 MPG higher with the outback, probably because of the CVT transmission. The car performs and accelerates better than the lighter Forester did and has no wind noise.

The Outback is considered a "crossover wagon" and will be taking the place of the 5 passenger Tribeca, which is scheduled to be discontinued (the 7 passenger Tribeca is still in production for the time being.)

Trish has been so happy to be commuting in this for the last few days. The 10-way power seat and power lumbar support make these long drives most enjoyable. She will still put the miles on as in the past, but I think this one will be around for a long, long time. I update my impressions as time goes by...

Re: Another Subie in the family

Very nice choice. I had the pleasure of spending some time with one at a car show and it was really nice. congrats. I feel you with the cvt/paddleshifters too, my wife's lancer gts has it and she really likes it. I could never get used to it though.

And speaking of transmission of the future, here's hoping that they bring some kind of dsg type trans to their sportier cars. My friend's vw gti has it and it's killer.

Re: Another Subie in the family

It's interesting to hear this John.

Any roadtests I have read of the new Legacy over here, mostly from England, they have bombed. Most road testers dislike the new Legacy. Not intense dislike, just way the wrong side of enthusiastic.

This is in strong contrast to the previous model. To a man they all seemed to have praise for that car.

The general rule of thumb over here is, if you make the new model bigger, heavier and slower than the outgoing you are on a hiding to nothing.

The use of a CVT gearbox perplexes me from a marketing standpoint. "Impression is everything". With a CVT as speed increases revs drop, the reverse of what is the norm or what is expected. The impression of exerting more power to the road or using the power spectrum of the engine revs is absolutely lost. Petrol heads never like CVT transmissions. They are the primary reason Nisson Muranos are worth buttons over here and never sold in numbers.

Subaru would appear to have shot themselves in the foot yet again. The engine of most interest over here would be the 2 litre flat four turbodiesel. Just when they develop an engine that can compete with or defeat the local European manufacturers' engines they drop it into a bigger and heavier body and combine it with an emasculating CVT transmission.

I know they are engineering focused but they don't deserve to succeed for not understanding what their target markets require.

Joe
