Re: uh ?

Yea, that's essentially the speed limit set on all Japanese cars from factory...over there. 112mph. Includes all Skylines/big powah carz as well. Tom has established that we have one too, though it's nowhere near as strict as the jdm speed limiter

I agree with this. I've had a few JDM SVXs and they all have had the 180 clock and the limiter in the ECU software [cuts the sparks @ 112 mph]. Also my twin turbo Legacies that were only really limbering up at that speed, they were jdm and had the limiter as well.

Are you serious about US cars having a limiter? Because I never believed it was true. It's my suspicion that the US cars are primarily limited by the very high road gearing which does not allow high revs in 4 due to increasing aerodynamic drag over 140 or so.

I don't recall anyone in the States ever saying that they were trying a top speed run and got cut by the limiter at X mph.

What's the story? Is it true? If so, what speed does it operate at?

Joe

There is no US limiter in any year. There is a 510km/h limter written into the software but the ECU doesn't have the hardware to use it. So feel free to do 520 km/h

Thanks Tom. That's good to know.

We'll be having a go at 320 kms when this engine is built, but 520, we probably won't be pushing that.

Hey Francis, I hope that wasn't on a public road, if it was we'd have to ban your butt!

Nah!!, Joking, man, joking. Don't say where it was, nobody saw you do it Bart.

245/250 is good, the SVX speedo is fairly accurate with standard diameter tires.

What's a sunfire? Is that a Pontiac, or something? They are probably not safe at much over that anyways. Remember Mr Nadar? "Unsafe at any speed" Ruined the sales of a pretty Chevy automobile.

Re: uh ?

They must have changed the laws in Japan from when I was there (73-75).
I knew a bar owner that had a 71 Trans Am and he told me that there were different classes of licenses that you could get.
He had a class 2 that allowed him to legally drive at 130mph on the Tomain freeway. He said the class 1 was even higher, but it was so long ago I dont recall. Maybe 150mph.

That's interesting. I'd say their focus on closing off maximum speeds started in the mid seventies.

I was working as a transport manager at the time. The first Japanese truck range imported from Japan into Ireland was the Hino. Their trucks were a big hit here at the time. Typical Japanese approach, fully featured cabin, very plush and an instant hit with the drivers who were more used to sparsely equipped and uncomfortable English and continental trucks.

Hinos had three lights fitted over the cabin. As the speed increased, first one lamp lit up, then two, then all three. Supposedly in Japan if you were driving with all three lights lit up the police stopped you and fined you for driving over the limit permitted for trucks.

Nowadays all trucks are fitted with tachygraphs, and the police can read up what you did all day. The speed sensitive lamps were an early Japanese system to monitor truck speeds.

I don't know exactly when the 180 kms clocks and limiters came into force, but they were in place all through the 90s.
