Now for the tough decision, JDM motor, rebuild this one, buy one from a junk yard, or part the car.

it would appear to be just this one, though I will run a test on the others when I have a chance.

Proper buildup of compression on the first two strokes, then just stops there.

Rings, methinks.

More like a valve, open/burnt, or a head gasket.

Ill yank the motor over the weekend and inspect the HG and valves first hand. I'll let you kn
ow what my findings are. The blue smoke on startup tells me its rings though.

Put two squirts of oil into the cylinder and check it again, if it goes higher = rings, if it stays about the same, it's a burnt valve, etc...

Are you checking it with all six plugs removed and the throttle wide open? You could also have a stuck ring, might try squirting some marvel mystery oil in the cylinder.

Did you sell the engine out of the claret? I wouldn't part that car out, too nice lol...

You might try to do a "Leakdown" if you can borrow the gauges (also available from Summit). It uses 100 psi air to pressurize the cylinder and the gauge measures the percentage of loss. Further the hissing will be out the breather (rings), intake (intake valves) or exhaust pipe (exhaust valves). The cylinder Has to have both valves closed and the vehicle locked so that it won't move (This will move a formula car across the garage). This won't fix anything but at least it will give you a better idea of what's wrong.

I've decided to rebuild the motor, the short block has a date with the machine shop on Monday.

A car with not even one parking lot ding shouldn't be parted out, I guess.

Between the rebuilt engine and the new tranny a few thousand miles ago (genuine subaru) and the new coat of liquid silver paint. I ougtta have a car thats worth a damn on my hands.

Patrick, how quickly did the cylinder foul the plug?? There are two avenues here if it is rings... Rings actually burned up or broke, OR the ring lands let loose. I have had lands break N/A and S/C so if it fouled very quickly, literally less than 5 mins of idling, I would imagine the ring-lands are broken and you may be in for a new piston along with those rings... Just a heads up

What kind of degrees do you have? idk they had things like that in the auto biz.

im guessing you passed the engines cert cause that oiling the cylinder is one of the questions... im finishing the last of mine this next week... all 5

I don't know the numbers, the ones I have so far are electrical, air conditioning, steering/suspension, and brakes. Tonight I did Auto Trans and Manual Trans/drivetrain, next week I have I think it's diagnosis and engine mechanical, not sure though.

As for degrees, I have an AAS (Associate of Applied Science) in Automotive Technology from the local community college, along with a 1-yr certificate in collision repair, I have an Associate of Specialized Technology in Auto Tech and Management from Wyotech, and a diploma in specialty automotive fabrication from Wyotech.
