Question Bearings, rear diff or CV joints ??

Unfortunately one of my cars now has problems with the above, but i'm not sure as to which combination..
wheel bearings - yes - after changing wheels and new tyres the noise from the rear end [like crap tyres] continues so i'm pretty sure based on the threads I've searched that noise is bearings [as to which side not sure, it seems to be generally from the rear]..but my next problem may be bearings continued but..

When reversing slowly turning either left or right [not there when reversing straight] I feel a "grumbling' from the rear as if you were driving on rough gravel..?? Prognosis pls ..car has 123000kms, I believe from previous owner no bearings or other had been changed.

Pointing the local Subaru dealer in the right direction should be less time consuming = $, I hope..

Thanks in advance

David

Hi David, I had bad tires that sounded as if the bearing was bad. New tires fixed that problem. I hope all goes well at the dealer.

some diagnosis

took the car to sube, up on the hoist over 60kph..yep you could hear the wheel bearing sound loud and clear, mechanic went to both sides with stethoscope type thing and told me the RHS rear was noisy, and the LHS side rear was fine.

2nd prob was/is currently thought to be as subsequent posts have discussed, the clutches in the transmission need "different' oil to whats currently there [which they themselves changed only a 1000kms ago]..the mechanic said he'd heard of a fix for this problem by using 'other' oil and then doing figure 8's to bed it in..if anyone has a brand or description of the additive or oil used here I'd appreciate it...

Car gets booked in when bearing comes in..

Dexron Mercon III is the fluid that should be used in the SVX transmission. Some people also use synthetic ATF.

Any good gear oil can be used in the f/r differentials.

Angry Not Well

rear bearing done - no noise now lovely BUT..the grumbling in reverse at low speed.. yeah well..

The tech fears gearbox wows..has been in there and adjusted but not completely fixed ..we'll need to book her in again !!..now in reverse doesn't rumble [as much] but now will actually stop on slow left or right turn in reverse [no braking req'd]...when moving from R to D now a real clunk!! the car feels slower like gearbox is too tight..unresponsive ..can still get Power light on but the box makes the car feel lethargic..also when driving and back off from say 80kms can here a subtle wherring sound ..like high sounding gear noise..stops when you touch brakes but then comes back......he hasn't finished yet..keeps talking about AWD is playing up [has already thoroughly checked the brakes nothing there]...where's this going..AWD ...glazed plates /transfer clutches/ or the whole friggin box ..I hope not....??
