ok wtf is this cable

when you pull the little garbage/ashtray out from under the stereo housing there's a big black cable that runs there, is that the cable for allowing the ignition to release the key when the shifter is in park? and anyone else have that area get pretty warm?

OK. Good Question. I don't know WTF the cable is (your guess is a very logical one) but I do know that that area around the ashtray and stereo emits A LOT of HEAT. All the time. If I put coins in the ashtray, drive for 30 mins, then retrieve them, the coins are HOT!!

This can't be good for the Stereo system.....

Is this heat from the transmission?

Re: ok wtf is this cable

Yes guys, it is from the transmission.

There already is a heat shield on the bottom of the car, above the transmission, to reflect heat away. The main problem is the transmission is very near the car floor, and heat leaks into the cabin due to radiation from the transmission.

You could try putting a more effective insulated shield on there, that would be a help. I have also thought it would be very useful to duct some outside cold air to this area, which would blow hot air out from between the transmission and the chassis. I never got around to doing anything about it though.

Cheers Joe! Thanks for the info. As heat is ALWAYS the enemy, I intend to take your advice on the heat shield and cool air ventilation - that is genius.

Re: ok wtf is this cable

Remind me, if I ever tear-down and restore my current SVX, or another one...

More radiant heat-reflective material on the transmission tunnel.

Maybe some of that mylar lined bubble-wrap insulation that they are marketing for houses and stuff, with the air chambers between two layers of reflective mylar, as a radiant reflector and air-space insulation.

Re: ok wtf is this cable

Ok, lets brainstorm the overhauling procedure of our SVX and make a list of things to look for/replace/fix when doing the process. Let's start that list and make it a sticky (if possible):
1- Heat shield/cooling the gearbox area.
2- ?

Re: ok wtf is this cable

That might make a good stand-alone FAQ-style thread.

But I am a newb owner... so mostly I'll be interested to see what the people who know have to say.

Even the 6speed gets VERY hot there. my rubber shield that is suppose to go around the shifter to block some of the heat has a tear in it so it gets EVEN hotter in my car. Not only that but my AC doesnt work (for some ungodly reason) and its been like 30 degrees C here with humity for the past 3 days. This wouldnt be soooo bad if there was more window that rolled down in the SVX haha.

Re: ok wtf is this cable

I was checking the tire pressure the other day, and I noticed the shadows on the ground, of the rippling heat waves just pouring out from under the front of the car. The engine wasn't even that hot. I had just driven a couple of blocks to the gas station. The fenders and hood were nearly too hot to touch. Ambient Temps were in the low 70s.

Seems like this car really could use some heat-extraction, and a bit more airflow management under the hood.

The transmission tunnel is probably one of the few places for underhood heated air to leave the engine bay, as well as the gearbox generating heat itself.

Re: ok wtf is this cable

There are no transmission cables inside the car, in fact, there is only one and it is for the shifter and is outside in the tunnel. You are probably seeing one of the antenna wires.

That is done electronically, there is no cable involved, btw.

Re: ok wtf is this cable

I'm curious about this excessive heating of the console/tunnel, because I've never noticed it in either of my cars. Have the affective cars had some shielding or insulation removed or lost?

Re: ok wtf is this cable

thats it, the new bumper i'm making is gonna have an air dam channel piping to cool the tranny.
The thoughts of using mini rads came to mind but hooking a pump and such is too much of a hassle,
simple tubing and free flowing air cooling :P

as for the heat ripples coming from the car ya i can see em when looking through my side mirrors, downside to closed deck engine block and the 1" insulation under the hood i guess
