Car heater coils and aviability

Okay a lot of the cars in OZ are starter to get the heater coils failing and we are no having much luck get newa one. One of our guys tried to buy one from Japan and they are out of stock. They are not sure if they will make any more.
The question is what can we do about it, my be bulk buy enough to get Japan to make an extra batch. I also realize that we can get after market ones that are simlar but I would rather the origanl Subaru unit. My old one lasted 450,000k or 12 years.
We need a plan peoples or a lot of car will be wrecked.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability

i think we would be better off getting a copy made here Tony, i'm sure we could get someone to make them for a better price than subaru would.

You have me worried as I am about to delve into mine with the object of repairing a small leak.

The outfit that built an alloy top radiator tank for me, should be able to fix anything, going by the quality of the tank. Will let you know how I get on.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability

Trevor,
Its a big job removing the dash and puting it back so when it comes out you olny want to do it once. If we buy the cores at USA price it will cost around $300 so its not worth the time and effort patch it. Also if it goes and is not court you can cook the engine.
We need to get a deal going on the orignal ones.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability

Hey Tony we definitely need to work this one through.

I still need to work out warranty and corrosion resistance. They said they can make up an aluminium core or a copper/brass core. I'm also not sure which will last longer.

If anyone knows a fair bit about galvanic corrosion let us know. If the PWR radiator is made of Aluminium, should the Heater also be made of Aluminium?

The specialist tells me that copper/brass will be the best quality but I was under the impression that Alumium (not an Alumium Alloy) was far better against dissimilar metal corrosion.

Will be finished and sorted before the 3rd of July

ps. For some reason my temp gauge didn't rise when the heater blew (CTS and gauge temp sensor are about a year old) BUT I did get it very early and bypassed and the car runs no dramas for over a month now

Jordan.

Re: Car heater coils and aviability

Ok so I have spoken to a few manufactures today.

One is a heatercore manufacturer that for some reason orders the heatercore in from England they are copper/brass.

I got in contact with PWR today and they said they have done them before but not for an SVX.

If anyone has a picture and dimensions of a heatercore can you please post one.

Also waiting back on Subaru Japan to hear how many orders we have to make to get them to manufacture the heater core again plus find out whether it's the exact same part LHDvsRHD

I will quite possibly be taking the one out of my parts car tomorrow and can get pics and dimensions for you

Edit: will it be different for RHD cars?

Hey Andy, I haven't seen you on this website, where are you from in Aus and have you fixed up your heater core before?

Re: Car heater coils and aviability

ohhh ok, I was up in Islington in Newcastle yesterday. You should get an SVX

The update is that I have spoken to the manufacturer, there are more than enough in stock, as well as an availability for more.

They can manufacture or can have manufactured LHD SVX heater cores too, but they will first need a sample. The more the orders the cheaper it will be for you.

The other options are to get in touch with Zexel, Calsonic or Nippon.

Jordan.

ps, for aussies, there was a post once from a guy from SA and no one on this forum replied to him, he was asking a question on this forum because he blew his heater core and needed to fix it, his username was down under or down_under
