Help! Rear Trany mount Bolts Striped...
I was trying to locate the squeaky sound from the rear part of trany on my 94 FWD. Turned out the 2 bolts that bolt the trany mount to the rear trany case cover striped the holes inside. Who ever did the last trany removal screwed it up!!!
My question are 1)Can I repair the thread? I hear about so call Heli-Coil, but dont really know how to use it? What about just JB weld it? Would it hold? 2)Or I need to just replace the tail housing cover plate where the trany mount was bolted to? Its 94 FWD, so it didnt have the drive shaft coming out of it. 3)Is this trany same as Legacy's? Can I swap the cover plate with a FWD legacy? If not, I will post a seprate post in wanted forum Thanks for the help!

Easiest thing to do might be to tap the holes (re-thread them slightly larger) if there's enough material around the holes in the cover, and not too much distortion of the holes, then use bigger bolts. You might have to drill out the holes on your tranny mount, too.
Helicoil is not much harder to use, and would work as well. Basically, you're replacing the destroyed threads with a coil of harder, stronger metal threads, which twists in with a special tool included in the kit. JB Weld might hold for a while, but there's a lot of torque there and I'm guessing you'd have to redo it eventually. There's a '94 FWD SVX tranny sitting loose in the U-pull yard near me. I might be able to get you a cover if all else fails, but I don't have any idea what it would cost right now. |
