electrical help

Ok, I replaced the fusible link and all the fuses and as soon as I re-connected the battery, the horn blew, the rear wiper started wiping (the switch was off) and the passenger side radiator fan started turning with the car off and no key in the ignition!

I turned the key and the car started for one second then blew the EG/ignition fuse #16. (what does EG mean?)
It also blew #25 clock, #6 wipers, # 15meter, and #18 cruise, abs, pwr steer.
But the fusible link did not melt and it is blowing less fuses than before.
I replaced the EG/ ignition fuse and I notice it blows as soon as I turn the key to "on".
I checked all obvious things like the mirror wires (disconnected them) and battery cables.
So now I have the horn and the rear wiper fuses pulled and the rad. fan disconnected or they would run constantly.
Also, the radio works, but now the cd player has no power and there is a cd in there. Is there a different fuse for cd player? Is there anyway to get the cd out?
I don't know what do next. Any suggestions?... anyone?
Thanks.
(I would like to make the Chicago meet, but mein auto ist kaput! And I don't wanna show up in a rusty legacy wagon.)

Holy Toledo! I think George Clooney put it best in the movie, "O Brother Where Art Thou" : "You're in a tight spot."

Golly <scratching head>, there may be a short in the wiring harness to your wiper stalk, or to the wiring harness through the steering wheel in general. Some people have problems from releasing their steering wheels and letting the "slam" upward instead of gently allowing them to raise -- Try removing the steering wheel cowling and look to see if there are any bare wires. Sorry that I'm not much help, and this is pure conjecture on my part, but it's all I can think of, off hand.

If you can make it, there is a meet going on at my place tomorrow. Bring your car there as well. Perhaps we can all have a look at it. Otherwise, just show up anyways, we have a guy comming up with a probe.

As for the fuse, there is something shorting out big time on your car. SVX is one of the PITA cars when it comes to electrical. Half of the car is connected to one fuse and the other half is connected to the other. If one component is shorted out, chances are probably half of your car might not work. Currently, one of my brake light is out. As soon as I hit hard on the brakes, my fuel gauge goes dead: as in the gauge slowly goes to empty and beyond and will not work till I turn off the car for a couple of minutes and start again. How is that for common sense? Nothing can make sense till you take a multimeter and figure out which ones are joined and which ones are not. You can take it to a dealer but last time I did that for a loose connector, he charged me 504 bucks. Try to do it yourself if you have a garage. I am comming down to tinley park to have my spark plugs changed and throttle body cleaned next weekend at my friend's place.

Wiring weirdness

A curly one indeed! You say that you have replaced the fusible link so that I presume that this had melted when the fault first occurred. However after replacing it only lower rated fuses blew.

If this assumption is correct it would indicate that you originally had a high current short in power wiring which has now cleared itself but heat from this short caused damage to adjacent wires in the loom which remains in the form of shorts to earth as well as between separate circuits or alternatively causing sneak circuits to earth.

Did something occur prior to the fault developing which could have caused mechanical damage to the loom? Has anything been dropped into contact with any exposed terminals in the system? This would of necessity have to involve multiple terminals e,g, the fuse box and on second thought does not appear likely.

Have you made any mods. which could have lead up to a fault. Think over everything you can suspect as possible. Use your nose it is likely insulation has melted and if so there may be a stink still detectable. The involment of one radiator fan would indicate that the fault is in the engine bay as the feed to the fans is unlikely to route from any other part of the car.

Unfortunately I do not have a wiring diagram so can not attempt to trace possible fault paths but hope the above suggestions may be of some help. If you discover anything which may provide a further lead post more info.

Best of luck, Trevor.
