Angry Bad day for me....Help me out...plz...

Hey guys,

atlast it happened today, my first gear is not engaging. If i put it in 1st gear and give it gas, it just moving very veyr slowly, and the rpms are not really shotting eventhough i press it to the floor and rpms are staying around 2500 not more than tht. Other alll gears are working fine.

Wht might the problem? ... other than my tranny goin to die. Is there any possible solution to get it back.

Can i run it on the gears left i mean on 2,3,4,R? or can i get back my 1st gear?

I have time to work on it till this month end, if i can get help from anyone. Plz, gimme some advice, i cant keep lookin my car at this state. I want to get it back.

If there is no other solution other than changing to manual, can you guys guide me wht to do and how to do?... i can get some other subaru guys over here and we can work on it.

thanks in advance,
-Pavan,

So you're saying you can start in 2nd gear manual mode like always?

Ok let me be clear and tell u wht happened. I stopped at stop sign to take a left, but i was little bit ahead into the lane and the cars are coming so i suddenly changed the gear into 'R' and pressed the gas even before it was engaged in tht gear. Then after tht when i keep it in '3' since i usually drive in '3' in city, the car is moving slowly and there is no pickup, but as far as my knowledge the car is starting in '2' and i am sure for tht. After tht i have tested it in putting in '1' but it was doin wht i explained inmy first post. But if i start in any other '2' or '3' or 'D' it is moving but not as fast as earlier when '1' is working. In all the gears the rpms are not goin higher than 2500 at starting.

Hope i am clear now. Lemme know if you want to know even more specific.

-Pavan.

sounds EXACTLY like the problem i'm having. so far i've changed out my shift solenoids and had my tranny rebuilt. everything checks out fine and the only thing i haven't changed is my tcu.

however, when i had the tranny rebuilt, the shop showed me what was left of the tranny and it was pretty badly beaten. i would definately have a shop look at the transmission.

please update when you know something... maybe it'll turn out as the same as mine is.

oh, and it wouldn't be wise to drive it the way it is... alot of slipping going on starting in 2nd gear and it would make things worse (provinding they could get worse)

that happened in my 94 L , pretty much the same symptoms then a week later my tranny went out completely. I could start the car but none of the gears would engage.

I hope in your case it is something else.

I've got a fancy solenoid pack that I've wired to do my shifting. One day a wire came loose and effectively disconnected a solenoid. The ECU freaked out and went into limp home mode. When this happens, it basically just goes to third gear and stays there. Yes, it's really gutless off the line. Yes, reverse, neutral and park work just fine. Yes, reconnecting the wire fixed the problem in my case (after I cycled the ignition switch once.)

It sounds like you're stuck in third. Does it shift at all? If it does, then you might be stuck in second, but second starts off much faster than third.

The good news is that if you're stuck in third, it's probably an electrical problem.

Pavan, here it is: stop driving your car, as most of the guys told you, and take it to that mechanic you told me about and let him have a look at it NOW BETTER THAN LATER. if you still drive your car with that tranny's condition, instead of paying (for Ex) $1800 for it now, your bill will keep climbing and climbing until it reaches near $4000 because it will get worse.... i think i convinced you now, right?

Perhaps you shifted to the "R" too soon while the car's still moving.
Plus, did you say you pushed the throttle even?

Good luck at the mechanic place.

Hey guys,

here is the mechanic diagnosis abt it, tellin tht the band brake drum was fell down and torn and is giving an estimate of $3400 for remanufacturing it.

wht should i have to do now. I think it s even better to have a manual transmission than doing this.

gimme your suggestions as soon as possible.

Don't get another SVX tranny and don't get yours rebuilt. Anything else is fine.

yeah thts exactly wht i am thinking of. I thought if it is something minor and if it costs under $1000 i owuld carry on witht he present one, but as soon as i heard their price, thts all i was speechless.

Plz tell me how can i tell them not to do anything if its the case of >$1000. Will they reinstall everything and give my car back?

I would more than prefer a manual for around $2000 rather goin with this auto.

If thts the case can anyone tell me for which 5-speed transmission i have to look for? (Legacy/Impreza)

whtels i need primarily to search for at junkyards?

is 4.44 or 4.11 is better? i need more speed

yeah i need a rear differential and pedal assembly as far as i know and some modification to be done. And is there anyone overhere who can help me on this work?

really i dont want to spedd 3K on rebuilting just this . tht sounds odd and weired. i really appreciate if someone helps me on this.

small car says they will do the manual conversion for $4000 (on the website) and they supply the parts. I would suggest the 4.11's for general use or 4.44 if your the raceing type. Rebuilding a trans does not cost that much assuming nothing internally is massively fudged most times its nothing more than a brake band(or two) and some cluch packs maybe a solonoid or other small part might go in as a preventive
